Reactions to TJC's Updated Equine Fatality Rates

  1. On December 15, 2010, the Jockey Club released updated equine fatalities stats drawn from two years of data in the Equine Injury Database. A "statistically significant" difference was found between fatality rates over dirt and synthetics surfaces.

From @tcfranks - Synthetic surfaces boast fewer fatal breakdowns than dirt according to Jockey Club statistics http://bit.ly/eImnmP

  3. How to interpret the findings was discussed:

Why's horse racing dying?: Data shows synthetics.reduce fatalities. Industry wants to tear them up (via FollowBolson) http://bit.ly/e2sAfN

@joedrape 1 more death on dirt versus synthetic for every 1,695 starters. You really think that's what's keeping people away?

@EJXD2@AlGoggin Lack of support for synthetics is symptomatic of tone deaf industry. 1 of 1,635 matters to casual fan, & it should to you

@ejplantain @nythoroughbred @jnchapel @o_crunk The lie is using the data released today to say "synthetic safer". The stats are true.

    @EJXD2 @nythoroughbred @jnchapel @o_crunk sorry, I'm being a nay-sayer. My real issue is indeed improper interpretation

From Jockey Club safety report: The statistics included here do not imply anything about the relative safety of a racing surface

  11. As was the reliability and meaning of the data collected by TJC:
  12. nythoroughbred
@jnchapel I know of at least one horse that was a training fatality in NY that was not reported to the EID. Reporting not accurate.

@EJXD2 Study says they count. But who is holding the tracks accountable? Isn't it voluntarily submitted data? Does anyone check behind them?

@jnchapel The info they have released is meaningless and only fuels the surface partisans. The info is pretty much useless without context.

  15. Questions were asked about the raw data:
  16. o_crunk
@EJXD2 Who has the raw data and where can one view it? Something other than a couple of charts.

@o_crunk raw data not available for public. TJC fears it would make tracks less likely to share info & that it would be misinterpreted

@EJXD2 @o_crunk @jnchapel Last summer Scollay said concern was tracks, as opposed to individuals, being labeled as "bad" or "good"

@EJXD2 That would be a big story if someone could get their hands on the raw data. Wonder how many peeps have access to it.

  20. If a dataset were available, people had ideas for how to use it:
  21. EJXD2
@jnchapel @o_crunk I'd certainly like to compare owner/trainer rates against standard deviation

@jnchapel I'm particularly interested in class levels. Not even that interested in track, surface, etc.

@EJXD2 That would be very revealing. @o_crunk I'm also interested in class, and would like to compare by pedigree, as well as by surface.

@jnchapel @EJXD2 @o_crunk is it incorrect to think that they probably don't want anyone to analyze that data by pedigree?

@GlennCraven @EJXD2 @superterrific @jnchapel @o_crunk I know a gal who was trying to get data on breakdown by Pedigree - very tough
