NPC/CPPCC 2013 Press Conference

Coverage of the first Two Sessions 2013 press conference, from hardworking, dedicated foreign correspondents who really should have known better.

  1. I never learn from my mistakes. Why am I here at the Great Hall of the People again? #NPC
  2. Q: Schedule of NPC seems just as longwinded as usual. Why?
  3. A: NPC v important, but we shortened it by a day.
  4. If you are watching on TV you are missing the story
  5. Only joking. There's nothing to be gained from being here.
  6. Love those questions from Xinhua. It's basically: "The Communist Party is awesome, why is that?"
  7. Xinhua asks #npc spokesperson about the success of the anti-corruption efforts #notaplantoranything
  8. NPC spokeswoman on China military spending, shorter version: war is peace.
  9. Smarter reporters than me are sneaking out of the hall
  10. A: Everyday when I wake up I look at the haze, strap on a face mask and take photos of how bad it is
  11. A: We face a daunting situation. We know it's a big deal for the public. Local officials will be judged on pollution.
  12. Fu Ying gives "old friend" Jaime Flor Cruz from CNN the last question. And he says: When will there be political reform? Ouch!
  13. A: I've been abroad. Who else is reforming like us?
  14. A: Political reform means keeping, and improving, the current system.
  15. A: As usual, foreigners don't get it but China has found a magic formula and we're keeping it.
  16. Fu Ying: foreigners don't understand what reform means. Or anything else for that matter.
  17. CCTV is waxing lyrical about Fu Ying's performance as #npc spox. Perhaps a sign of official nerves about her chattiness?
  18. I love the NPC, mainly for making the sky blue.
