#NotONA - If we build it, we will come.
What happens when journalists don't make the trip to ONA12? They create an event of their own. And then someone makes a Storify about how an idea became a reality.
- It started with an idea.
- A small group of NYC-area journalists decided that even though they weren't going to ONA12 - more formally known as the 2012 Online News Association Conference - they didn't have to miss out on the fun of meeting other journalists.
- They wondered: what if they created their own event - an East Coast response to ONA?
Naturally, they gave it a hashtag for a name: #NotONA.
They decided to open invitations to the public - anyone who was interested could come. All they had to do was see the hashtag.
So it was tweeted - and it spread. - The list kept growing.
- Over 20 people have signed up for #NotONA already, which will happen sometime this week. Are you in? - bit.ly/notona
- Others took notice and helped spread the word.
- :) / @ProducerMatthew #NotONA in New York. So far, @ElanaZak, @JakeBeckman, @AnthonyQuintano, @BAHJournalist, @AlexJamesFitz and @Twatan.
- People from all over the world liked the idea.
- Even ONA itself voiced approval.
- #NotONA was an idea - but there were no details. When would it happen? Well, why not crowdsource it and let the people coming decide?
- The #NotONA NYC crew is putting together a date for a meetup in the city tmblr.co/ZMjv1yTklykg
- RT @ProducerMatthew: If you're in NY, not going to ONA & want to get together, here's the form to fill out. - bit.ly/notona #NotONA
- Where?
- Ultimately, Muck Rack offered to host the event at their office.
- Excited attendees started to pitch fake panel ideas - a humorous nod to ONA12.
