The No-Breakfast Club

In which the Itsmotherswork twitterfeed comes alive with teachers and other kindly individuals who are feeding the UK's poor and hungry children.

  1. On Question Time last night, Caroline Spelman was praising the virtues of "thrift" as a household measure that could help bring down the deficit. And that made me cross...
  2. Spelman - a thrifty household cuts the frivolity before the basics! You are making people go hungry so the rich can pay less tax. #bbcqt
  3. But @avipatch hadn't personally seen any evidence that people are currently going hungry under this administration.
  4. @itsmotherswork "people going hungry?" last I checked, we still have u/e benefit and social security...
  5. I know that my services work with hungry children, but I also knew that I wouldn't be alone. So I put a call out across my Twitter timeline....
  6. Teachers in timeline, @avipatch is querying whether UK has poor & hungry children. How many of you have children arrive with no breakfast?
  7. ...and repeated it again this morning. And the replies came flooding in.
  8. @itsmotherswork @avipatch You don't need to be a teacher to answer that. I see kids who I know had no breakfast in playground evey day.
  9. @itsmotherswork @avipatch pretty obvious when children have had no breakfast-lethargic, poor concentration, pale etc 10/150? not scientific!
  10. @itsmotherswork @avipatch Yes, I do. I buy cereal bars for them/give cartons of school milk. Also buy them hats/gloves to keep at school.
  11. @itsmotherswork @avipatch I have pupils whose shoes are too small/falling apart, who have no proper warm clothing, am seeing real poverty.
  12. @itsmotherswork not a teacher, married to one, a few without b/fast. happy birthday!
  13. @avipatch @itsmotherswork I've only been teaching for two years but it got worse in last year, more worn out uniforms, lack of eqpt too
  14. @mathnqt @avipatch @itsmotherswork Yes - trousers very frayed at bottoms, socks falling apart.
  15. @itsmotherswork @avipatch @liveotherwise not a teacher but I know this happens at the children's school quite regularly.
  16. @kateab @itsmotherswork @avipatch have had teacher with private feed say her school has approx 1/6.
  17. @itsmotherswork - several, and always have cereals and breakfast bars in cupboard. Also witnessed food "hoarding" at Xmas parties etc. :o(
  18. @janeycopson @itsmotherswork Yes, me too - seen children also quite stressed around food, or asking if they can take it home.
  19. @itsmotherswork We donate food to put together food parcels/toiletries too. (16 -18year olds)
  20. To follow on from @itsmotherswork's tweet, our staff are all takng food in next week so every child gets pre-SATS breakfast.
  21. @itsmotherswork's tweet, our staff are all takng food in next week so every child gets pre-SATS breakfast.” This also happens in my school !
  22. @QueenofBirkdale @itsmotherswork We have a 'brainy breakfast' every morning before SATs next week to ensure kids eat something.
  23. Plenty of schools, it seems, need to feed their children up before exams and tests.
  24. @itsmotherswork several we do free breakfast in support dept for those we have identified
