Mothers Are Always Wrong
A Breastfeeding mention in my Twitter timeline always provokes an interesting discussion. Yesterday was no exception.
- So, @AnnalisaB tweeted the link to this article yesterday (7 June):
Extended breastfeeding: a father's perspectiveAs the storm over that issue of Time magazine begins to subside, countless people have had their say about extended breastfeeding across blogs, radio programmes and newspaper columns. Opinions have come from doctors, breastfeeding experts, older mums, younger mums, random people on the street ... almost everyone except the partner of an extended breastfeeder.- It's a follow-up piece to the furore about the Time Magazine cover which showed an older child (4yo) breastfeeding. I RTd it, adding that I thought it was an interesting article, and also that there were some surprises in it. And that started a really busy conversation.
- @itsmotherswork I guess its because of how other people make them feel...I don't really have an opinion on this, its not my place to judge
- @itsmotherswork I think it's because of stigma of #breastfeeding older toddler or at least that's how I read it
- And there was lots of agreement. People may feed for longer, but don't feel comfortable about doing so where people can see them.
- @Novembervivi @doctorrah @itsmotherswork Same, can't imagine trying to do it outside now. But still #breastfeeding at 15 months
- I really don't understand that stigma, but it's definitely the case that some people (many of whom fiercely promote Breastfeeding a young baby) suddenly get all squeamish as that baby gets older.
- @bapesaurus @itsmotherswork that is dreadful, I will never understand peoples problem with breastfeeding in public. It's just babies eating!
- @ScooterGirlUK @itsmotherswork still up against ignorance/prejudice. You have to be confident in yourself & have a hard neck #breastfeeding
- @itsmotherswork seems people have a skewed perspective. 1-3 olds etc are BABIES! if ppl choose to sexualise feeding it's not me with issues.
- @Redjodie1973 @itsmotherswork agree sexualising is just weird and observers problem. But disagree that 3 yr olds are babies.
- Some people agree with me about the convenience of Breastfeeding (at any age).
- RT @SocialWorkKent: @itsmotherswork agreed I've got twins so bottles were even more hassle. Breastfed up to 6 months.
- But also for some people bottles aren't the pain I imagine them to be, and Breastfeeding isn't the pleasure.
- RT @EmmaLangman: @itsmotherswork I bottle-fed my youngest (#adoption) and that works anywhere too. Some parents just like to create a dr ...
- @EmmaLangman :-) Absolutely true if you've got your bottle(s) all prepared and with you, yes.
- @alijmbacon @itsmotherswork reality is it's not miles easier for EVERYONE. For me it just wasn't a dreamy, easy experience, painful in fact
- @itsmotherswork I had a terrible, painful time trying to BF with both mine. Oppressive midwives didnt help. Felt 100% better when stopped
- And there's still lots of questions about why people Breastfeed as and when they do.
- @itsmotherswork - its how often I don't quite understand - my 2.5 yr old only has (cows) milk am and bedtime - during the day it's food...
- @itsmotherswork - I think it's when breastfeeding older kids when they wouldn't otherwise be getting a cup of milk that gives it a -ve image
- @alijmbacon Yes, I can see that. Although I guess if I was feeling sparky, I'd probably say, if yours can have a chocolate biscuit, mine....
