Kenya 2012: A Visit to Kibera

The International Reporting Project (IRP) took a group of 12 influential bloggers from around the world to Kenya on June 17-26 for an in-depth examination of reproductive health and population issues in that East African country.

  1. Nairobi, Kenya's capital, is home to Kibera, which may be the largest slum in East Africa.
  2. In Kenya and headed to Kibera, one of the world's largest slums to meet with women and families about #familyplanning access today. #IRP
  3. We spent the day in a slum, which was fascinating, horrible and uplifting all at the same time.
  4. Eating out in Nairobi. Unbelievable that this is in the same city as the slum that we visited earlier
  5. Being all organised, I brought dettol with me to clean my boots. Glad I did.
  6. I prefer to believe this is a Kenyan boy band being advertised in the Kibera slum. instagr.am/p/MBxVFjojiJ/
  7. Had a really interesting day in Nairobi. But of course our blogging time plans didnt work out, but tomorrow I will write for sure. #irp
  8. Still need to process all the things I saw and heard. Feeling exhausting on so many levels. #irp
  9. Spent the day in Kibera in Nairobi, one of world's biggest slums. Officially 1 million. Fixer says 2 mil. Locals say 3 mil.
  10. The number one development issue according to Nairobi slum locals I met isn't schools or clinics -- it's toilets.
  11. Apparently, there are about 60 toilets in Kibera, Nairobi slum. For 1 million people. Or 2 million. Or 3.
  12. In Kibera w/ Internat. Reporting Project. Arranged interviews. Woman w/ encephalitic infant, no treatment. What, really, is there to ask?
  13. Looking at my photos of today's visit to Nairobi Kibira slum. Realized the coffin maker advertises his wares with a casket for a child.
  14. Spent today in Nairobi's Kibera slum. Top two problems: toilets and sanitation. Also walking. http://pic.twitter.com/Wr4L4RZr
  15. On the plus side, there's no shortage of cyber-cafes or mobile phone shops in Sub-Saharan slums. http://pic.twitter.com/ww8CLN8h
  16. You can only admire the business ethic of someone who turns their entire building into a monument to their skill. http://pic.twitter.com/aVEMzc6N
  17. Skeptical child is skeptical. Hopefully this attitude will keep him away from Kibera's faith healers & herbalists. http://pic.twitter.com/Y1L5YNnR
  18. Here's where that kid goes to school. About half the class/room here. Much more cheerful than it looks. http://pic.twitter.com/qDrtK8rk
  19. And here's the local water supply. A single tap, running on Tuesdays and Saturdays only. (Illegal alts exist) http://pic.twitter.com/DzyPHmF0
  20. The 'Zion Hotel', like most Kibera 'hotels', isn't one. 'Hotel' seems to indicate some kind of retreat/shag palace http://pic.twitter.com/HaNH9PWe
  21. Enough for now - dawn start. Will blog Kibera tomorrow. It's a weird place, uncounted thousands living in the grip of an unseen force.
  22. Visited Africa’s largest and poorest slum Kibera, Nairobi Kenya today. An emotional experience. Nothing prepares you for this kind of misery
  23. A Stroll through Africa’s Largest and Poorest Slum: By Chido Onumah* Kibera slum in Kenya I… goo.gl/fb/NeZ0j
  24. Kibera aid NGO @uwezakenya says numbers I was given on Kibera, Nairobi population wrong; *much* lower: mapkibera.org/blog/2010/09/0…
