Sexist Language Earns Sqoot Lots of Fury
Sqoot, a daily deal api, in an attempt to rally the Boston tech community for a hackathon, got it profoundly wrong.
- The current version of the API jam does not contain the offending language:
Boston API JamTweet and get in for free! http://bit.ly/A46MBD Boston API Jam Saturday March 31st through April 1st, 2012 Forget everything you kn...- It has been, however, captured by hundreds of people. The Perks included lots of things... including women.
- “Need another beer? Let one of our friendly (female) event staff get that for you.” apijam-boston.eventbrite.com You’re kidding me, right @sqoot?
- RT @cbarrett: Words fail. So fucking angry. Fuck you, @sqoot img.skitch.com/20120320-fmsc5… twitter.com/#!/cscotta/sta… twitter.com/#!/sqoot/statu…
- RT @webstartwomen: .@sqoot You're missing the point. Listing "Women" as a perk akin to massages and top shelf booze is demeaning. cc @WorkBarBoston
- Mike Maney aptly pointed out that this day featured a great triumph for women in a whole other industry:
- Day of Contrast: Saudis OK women for Olympics espn.go.com/espnw/olympics… vs @Sqoot OKs women to fetch beer img.skitch.com/20120320-fmsc5…
- Soon requests started flowing to the sponsors to pull sponsorship:
- RT @SteveStreza: @cloudmine @TheLevelUp @ConstantContact @mongohq @SimpleRelevance @Heroku Please pull sponsorship for @sqoot's hackathon sexism.
- Some sponsors backed out:Heroku:
- Apigee:
- MongoHQ:
- @shameonseamus Thank you for your note ... we do not support this behavior and are in touch with event orgs to see that changes are made.
