IDEO Design Evenings
On Thursday, October 18, 2012, IDEO hosted an incredible group of creative people for a panel discussion on the culture of making in San Francisco at our Pier 28 studio. The panel included these rock stars: @TaylorStitch, @HeathCeramics, @SmittenIceCream and @TheBoldItalic.
- Presentations by Heath Ceramics, Smitten Ice Cream, Taylor Stitch, and Bold Italic #designevenings @ideo
- Some of the graphics for "A City of Makers" by IDEO's very own and hyper-talented Alana Zawojski — one for each maker (from right to left): Cathy Bailey, co-owner Heath Ceramics; Robyn Fisher, founder of Smitten Ice Cream; Michael Maher, co-founder of Taylor Stitch; Laura Ramos, executive producer of The Bold Italic.

- Attendees were asked to fill out a name-tag that included what they make.

- The party was just getting started with hand-picked cheeses from our own IDEO cheese-pert Andy Switky as well as some local and European brews.

- Excited to be a part of @ideo A City of Makers panel, with @thebolditalic, @SmittenIceCream & @taylorstitch #designevenings
Inspiring #designevenings with #heathceramics, #bolditalic, #taylorstitch and #smittenicecream (yum!) Thank you!The panel was hosted by IDEO's David Webster and the night began with introductions from each of the makers and then a few questions from Webster.
- "How do you summon up the courage to commit yourself to this mission of being a maker?" —David Webster #designevenings via @racheltobias
- Cathy Bailey told a quick story about visiting the Heath Ceramics factory before she worked there. "When I got to Heath there was a sound — and it was really different than my office. It was the sound of an old factory. It resonated on a level. My first question to the guy on my Heath tour was, 'Who fixes this stuff?!'" [Referring to the machines and their parts.]

- "Be pro-human. Go into your favorite shop + tell them how much you love their stuff!" —Laura Ramos of @thebolditalic #designevenings
- "San Francisco has an air of possibility." Laura Ramos of @thebolditalic on what makes this a great city for makers. #designevenings @ideo
#designevenings at @ideo :: makers talking about making... Putting the human back in technology! http://pic.twitter.com/Kgym6gnUThe amazing discussion continued with David Webster asking, "You're so busy making content, what do you do for creative nourishment?"
Laura Ramos responded with a nod to drawing inspiration from cities around the world and warm and sunny days when The Bold Italic lets everyone out of the office to explore. Michael Maher of Taylor Stitch mentioned the most obsessive makers they knew, "We gain inspiration from the folks who stay up all night long working on stuff."
- And the night concluded with some words of wisdom from all four makers.
