#StorageITchat - Storage Tiers

Q&A session w/the panelists and attendees chatting about different requirements and strategies for storage tiers.

  1. We have two expert panelists from @Wikibon discussing our topic on storage tiering today #storageITchat
  2. This is a Q&A session w/the panelists and attendees chattin’ about different requirements and strategies for storage tiers #storageITchat
  3. #storageITchat Could you start by defining tiering. Marketing has gotten hold of the term, I fear...
  4. To me it’s about matching data and device characteristics to minimize costs and maximize performance #storageitchat
  5. #storageITchat So allocation efficiency is the goal, not utilization efficiency?
  6. #storageITchat Originally, referred to an IBM strategy for moving data between memory, DASD then Tape.
  7. #storageITchat #Wikibon Metrics that decide tiering: Performance, Availability, Share-ability, Cost to purchase, Cost to maintain & Service
  8. For background on Storage Tiering, see Wikibon's research on ATS ready for Primetime: wikibon.org/wiki/v/Automat… #storageITchat
  9. Could you highlight best practices for tiering #storageITchat Ratio of SSDs and normal drive
  10. #storageITchat Correct, HSM. But tiering seems to mean a lot of different things now.
  11. @SystemsandTech @JonToigo #storageITchat...mktg got hold of term "tiering"...Tiers of Joy...I see this as a mktg campaign in 4, 3, 2...
  12. So storage tiering is different from storage tiers, yes? #storageitchat
  13. @dvellante #storageITchat #Wikibon The most important aspect is Performance HSM is also tiering, but but limited to active and passive data
  14. #storageITchat Data moves to storage that delivers accessibility requirements (performance) and best cost. Interesting.
  15. ok - so storage tiering is differentiating active from passive data and storing that data on the most appropriate device #storageitchat
  16. #storageITchat And automation aims at doing this without human intervention...at least once policies are set up.
