Varied holistic strategies of literacy learning

  1. RT @DahlD: My latest post: How and why to get your class blogging j.mp/fslxXQ <-- Excellent post! I absolutely agree!
  2. @DahlD Was just looking at your great student blogs. I have a question for you: do you correct the spelling before publishing?
  3. @Grade1 @DahlD how do we build knowledge/use of browser spellcheckers with kids? Lack of school use confuses me
  4. @Grade1 @DahlD we can even have multiple languages in spellcheck in Firefox
  5. @Grade1 @DahlD anyway, I just think multi-lingual spellcheck skills are vital in this century
  6. @DahlD @Grade1 I think understanding the red line and finding right word builds sightword skills, no?
  7. @irasocol Absolutely. I like what you said about it drawing attention to the errors.
  8. @Grade1 @irasocol @DahlD we teach long division bt 1ce out of school, we all use calculators. When was the last time u did a long div. Prob.
  9. @mthornton78 its nice to understand arithmetic, not sure we need to be great at it
  10. @irasocol @Grade1 @DahlD we should teach them all ways to check. Once out of school, who will be judging their method of spelling correctly
  11. @irasocol I think that can and should be taught in upper grades. 2nd graders are still learning basic spelling strategies.
  12. @DahlD @Grade1 don't you already know those really struggling with those phonological skills?
  13. @irasocol @DahlD I agree! Helps them with reading too. Need to read the options and choose the right one.
  14. @irasocol @DahlD My students add words to their own dictionary & use word patterns from the word wall to spell, but I still add words to ...
  15. @Grade1 @DahlD That's cool. Do they know how to build their own dictionaries? At some grade we need to do that
  16. @mthornton78 Yes, but I teach 2nd grade. At that level they're still learning how to decode and spell.
  17. @DahlD @Grade1 I guess I'm so frustrated by middle schoolers with none of these skills, and wondering where to begin
  18. @irasocol Oh, I understand. I would think 4th or 5th would be a good place to start.
  19. @irasocol @DahlD I think you do! Good to have the word patterns up though & reinforce this with spelling. I think there`s more to writing...
  20. @irasocol @DahlD than just spelling,& it`s easy to get caught up in the spelling. It`s a balance.I want the children to focus on content too.
  21. @irasocol @DahlD I try to balance it all. Give them phonemic awareness, use the word wall, & teach them dictionary skills too.
  22. @DahlD always amazes me that we need to test kids so much. I usually ask the teacher
  23. @DahlD @Grade1 I see TTS with word-by-word highlighting helping reading so much via sightword skills, see same with Speech Recognition >
