Release of Earthquake prone Buildings in the Hutt

Today, Peter Dunne of United Future released a list of buildings from survey that are at earthquake risk in Lower Hutt / Petone. The list does not provide date of survey or requirements to be meet. But in light of current situation in Christchurch bears thinking about

No doubting Petone would not be what it is without those buildings but the argument remains the same as CHCH should we avoid doing something

@HuttNZ As with the Welly list, there is no information about WHAT makes these buildings EQP, nor how current the list is.

@cafe_chick The PDF shows EOL which I think is the timeframe to make it EQsafe, I think they had 15 yrs so backdate to survey of building

@cafe_chick U are right that it would be better knowing survey date but no doubt these are the at risk buildings some may have had work done

@HuttNZ Does materials used & style of the Petone buildings make earthquake strengthening more effective than in CHCH heritage buildings?

@TheHutt It is interesting to note that few of the buildings are more than 2 storeys versus CHCH but the issue is the cost to landlords

@HuttNZ The cost of lost character is harder to forecast. Though the bulk of character comes with the people who run the Petone businesses

@TheHutt True, I would also suggest rental cost was the reason most of this business established in the early days of Petone renaissance
