Dialogues: Alison Klayman

  1. On Thursday, November 8 at 3 pm, Alison Klayman, director of Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry, took questions from Twitter users. This is part of the Hirshhorn's Dialogues program, an ongoing series of Twitter-based Q&A sessions with artists, curators, critics, collectors, and scholars.
  2. Just a few minutes to go! "Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry" director Alison Klayman is here. Get your questions in early. Tag them #AskKlayman
  3. .@herbalmiswak Thanks, that's very kind. Sharing the film and having a dialogue are what it's all about. #AskKlayman
  4. @hirshhorn How did Ai Weiwei obtain the ancient jug that he painted "Coca-Cola" over? #AskKlayman
  5. .@missmarymorgan At the time it was easy to come across such treasures in flea markets. Ai has a good eye... #AskKlayman
  6. @missmarymorgan ...on the other hand, how do you know what's real and what's fake? #AskKlayman
  7. .@charlesouthier The impact that it had nationwide in Beijing not just Sichuan. Everyone cared, not just those who knew victims. #AskKlayman
  8. .@charlesouthier The idea of remembering victims by their names was particularly resonant. #AskKlayman
  9. .@charlesouthier The government wasnt pretending the quake didn't exist, as they had before, but they weren't naming the victims #AskKlayman
  10. @hirshhorn I was really touched in @AWWNeverSorry when individuals volunteered to send in their recording for a name #AskKlayman
  11. .@charlesouthier That was already 2 yrs after the quake. That's why I wanted to include it in the film--to show Ai's persistence #AskKlayman
  12. .@charlesouthier It is available through underground channels and online. It's torrented, really. There's a big appetite for it. #AskKlayman
  13. @hirshhorn I was definitely impressed by his continuing persistance "I'm brave because I know how bad it can be" #AskKlayman
  14. .@charlesouthier I've definitely been quoted in China as saying I'm happy the film is being bootlegged there. #AskKlayman
  15. I've heard Ai Weiwei has a great sense of humor. Any tales from while you were filming? #AskKlayman
  16. .@hilafree He's a prankster. His prep for a talk with Herta Müller included "How do you get a Nobel Prize?" & ... #AskKlayman
  17. .@hilafree ... and "Would you ever date a Chinese man?" #AskKlayman
  18. I haven’t seen film & am looking forward to @hirshhorn’s screening tonight. Curious, did you fear for your safety while filming? #askklayman
  19. .@alanaquinn1 There were some tense moments, but overall my concern for Ai Weiwei and the people I was with was much greater. #AskKlayman
  20. .@alanaquinn1 In general, the risks were much less for me. I was an accredited journalist, so I thought I was within my rights. #AskKlayman
  21. #askklayman I see, thanks! I don't know a lot about China's civil rights but have been interested ever since visiting @LaogaiMuseum in DC.
  22. One documentary (besides your own) that you think everyone should see before they die? #AskKlayman
