Archbishop in the glare of the Sun - John Sentamu and the Murdoch newspaper

A small Storify of only some selected tweets re Dr. John Sentamu's column in the Sun On Sunday.

  1. This is a small Storify of only some selected tweets comprising part of the debate within the Church of England regarding the column Archbishop John Sentamu wrote for the Sun on Sunday, on 26 February 2012. For context and more on this all, see my blog post on this. Note that the "++" used by some tweeters means "Archbishop" (a single + means a bishop). "Scouser" is an inhabitant of Liverpool, Britain.
  2. Hey, Anglican experts! What pastoral role does ++Sentamu play for those in his province? (i.e. scousers who hate the Sun & its lies) #jft96
  3. sadly, the Church sickened by NoTW hacking is Charlotte, not the Archbishop of York #dontbuythesun #dontwriteforthesun #sentamu
  4. There, Manon Ceridwen Parry is referring to the news reports on the voicemail-hacking and other scandals of the Murdoch newspapers (including the Sun) in Britain, and how Charlotte Church accepted a settlement from News International, the Murdoch company owning the Sun, the defunct News Of The World and the new successor Sun on Sunday newspapers. She says she did it in order to stave off yet more Murdoch newspaper harrassment of her mother.
  5. Odd juxtaposition: ABY recommends we buy The Sun bit.ly/z8SRdT while Independent reports Church's deep sexism independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-n…
  6. There ABY means the Archbishop of York.
  7. 'And if you can buy the Sun seven days a week, even better!' Cannot express how disappointed I am to read these words from John Sentamu.
  8. We are a church for Sun readers as much as we are a church for Guardian readers, but no need to drum up business for them IMHO
  9. Yeah, God works in mysterious ways but WTH is Archbishop Sentamu doing giving the Sun on Sunday his blessing?
  10. I think that John Sentamu's decision was brilliant to accept a column in the Sun. It's a blessing for the @c_of_e to reach so many readers.
  11. So my letter to @johnsentamu seems to be getting a split of opinions from Christians. Any more for any more? sparkleandshade.blogspot.com/2012/02/dear-j…
  12. "a massive corporation with endless resources, a phenomenal amount of power" - Charlotte Church on fighting Murdoch: …empireanditsnestofvipers.blogspot.com/2012/02/charlo…
  13. WOW! Now we can buy the paper that systematically engaged in the corruption of public officials 7 days a week! #leveson
  14. .@nigecw @Gurdur Well @nickbaines Bishop of Bradford and a Liverpool supporter certainly mentioned it bit.ly/ADRqt5
  15. @thevicarswife The point is that Sentamu endorsed the filthy rag, not that he wrote for it.
  16. @KerronCross @RevArun @JohnSentamu has also promoted the rag and it's about more than #notw, also S*n's refusal to apologise re Hillsborough
  17. @JohnSentamu I understand your writing in the Sun, but can't comprehend your promoting it. I'm with @billybragg on this one. #NeverBuyTheSun
  18. Again, for context and more on this all, see my blog post on this.
