#gdnchat on disability changes - your stories

Every Wednesday we run a Twitter chat looking at some of the personal affects of the changes to benefits currently underway by the UK government. On Wed 30 January 2013 we look at how the move from disability living allowance to personal independence payments (PIP) are impacting on people's lives

  1. Your stories and personal experiences of the changes:
  2. I spent 18 months waiting for my DLA tribunal, during which time I had to somehow find a way of surviving with higher living costs #gdnchat
  3. @pseudodeviant The first time I applied for DLA in 2005 it took nearly two years to win at tribunal. #gdnchat
  4. @Claire_Phipps I was without DLA through the appeal, struggling to buy food and pay rent. #gdnchat
  5. @Claire_Phipps After the appeal I got a two year back-payment but we had already had bank charges and gone without things we needed #gdnchat
  6. @Claire_Phipps @samdownie I may lose my Motability vehicle, so will be unable to leave the house as I'm a full time w'chair user #gdnchat
  7. @mmaher70 yup I was a disabled child and now a disabled adult, same condition, but treated so differently. #gdnchat #WOWpetition
  8. @guardian #gdnchat I can physically walk but need someone with me at all times. This isn't covered by #PIP
  9. There was a lots of worries about mobility specifically:
  10. Mobility seems to be an element of #PIP changes that's causing most concern: is that right? What might change for you? #gdnchat
  11. #gdnchat I'm terrified that I won't get the mobility element of PIP. Without my Motability car I would be housebound.
  12. @Claire_Phipps #gdnchat Wife on DLA,MS sffr, on 'copaxone' disease modifying drug. Has to do 25 mtr wlktest, to receive drug. PIP 20mtrs ???
  13. Under #PIP mobility wld not have qualified for enhanced, wld not have afforded powerchair, wld have had to give up PhD,not got job. #gdnchat
  14. Your worries about the changes from DLA to PIP:
  15. Worried about the changes to #PIP and would like the Govt to measure cumulative impact of changes, please sign WOWpetition.com #gdnchat
  16. #gdnchat the churning of #DLA into #PIP is one stage - also worry what disbanding #ILF will do (throw costs at overburdened local councils)
  17. I fear I will end up having to appeal a decision when I move to PIP & then be without the income I rely on until it's overturned #gdnchat
  18. As I've stated on the web article, I'm also hugely concerned that #Atos is going to be doing the assessments in my area for #PIP #gdnchat
  19. Many people can walk reasonably well but have conditions that mean public transport is unsuitable. What will happen to them? #PIP #gdnchat
  20. Remains to be seen if people with crippling mental health problems will get a better deal under #PIP. They have lost out under #DLA #gdnchat
  21. #gdnchat vulnerable people need secure reliable consistent support - not turmoil and threats #gdnchat
  22. But some tweeted the idea that some of the changes from DLA to PIP would be positive:
