Leith Storm 3rd January 2012

Central Scotland was hit by very strong winds on the morning of the 3rd of January. On Blackford Hill one gust hit 102mph. This is how the storm affected Leith.

  1. The day before the MET office had issued a yellow alert and warned of strong winds. Even at 6.30am they were predicting 'some disruption' but it sounded as though they didn't quite expect the storm to be quite so severe.

@hmemar it's possible that rush hour traffic will experience some disruption today, just be careful when travelling. ^DH

  3. But at 8.15am the MET upgraded the storm warning to RED ALERT, which according to their website means:
    - Widespread structural damage, e.g. roofs blown off, mobile homes overturned, power lines brought down.
    - Risk to personal safety from flying debris.
    - Potentially widespread and/or prolonged interruptions to power.
    - Expect widespread transport disruption due to e.g. roads blocked by fallen trees.

It became clear that this was not going to be just another winter gale....

Edinburgh Blackford Hill has just recorded a gust of 102mph. The fiercest winds will ease in the next few hours. Stay safe Chris F

  7. Sander van den Driesche, who lives on Leith Walk posted this video clip taken from his flat at about 9am. It quickly racked up hundreds of views and ended up featured by most main stream media outlets, like STV... And the BBC, and Sky and the Telegraph...to name just some of them. But it was up on the Greener Leith blog first!
  8. By 10am the disruption caused by the storm was so severe that the Police were advising people not to travel at all.

  10. But the Wheelie Bin incident, whilst famous, was by no means the most serious. Great Junction Street was closed off to traffic completely after masonry from the Old Leith Co-op building began falling onto the street.

Oh dear, chunks are coming off the old coop department store on Junction St, careful if you're round that way.
