Leith Storm 3rd January 2012
Central Scotland was hit by very strong winds on the morning of the 3rd of January. On Blackford Hill one gust hit 102mph. This is how the storm affected Leith.
- The day before the MET office had issued a yellow alert and warned of strong winds. Even at 6.30am they were predicting 'some disruption' but it sounded as though they didn't quite expect the storm to be quite so severe.
- But at 8.15am the MET upgraded the storm warning to RED ALERT, which according to their website means:- Widespread structural damage, e.g. roofs blown off, mobile homes overturned, power lines brought down.
- Risk to personal safety from flying debris.
- Potentially widespread and/or prolonged interruptions to power.
- Expect widespread transport disruption due to e.g. roads blocked by fallen trees. It became clear that this was not going to be just another winter gale.... - The Forth Road Bridge wind speeds were quite literally off the scale.
- Sander van den Driesche, who lives on Leith Walk posted this video clip taken from his flat at about 9am. It quickly racked up hundreds of views and ended up featured by most main stream media outlets, like STV... And the BBC, and Sky and the Telegraph...to name just some of them. But it was up on the Greener Leith blog first!
