ACTA workshop in the European Parliament

Parliament just started working on ACTA. Apart from committees meeting this week, EP organized a workshop opened and web streamed for the public. Here are the highlights:

  1. Discussion on the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) in the International Trade Committee started Wednesday. Parliament will need to decide whether or not to approve the agreement. On Tuesday a petition against ACTA was handed to the Petitions Committee, and on 1 March a public workshop with experts and bloggers looked at issues such as ACTA's potential impact on civil liberties.
  2. Program of the ACTA workshop
  3. Chairman Vital Moreira: purpose of EP workshop to get first-hand knowledge of ACTA agreement
  4. At #ACTA workshop in EP. Twice as much time for pro-ACTA speakers than critical ones.
  5. First part of the #EP workshop starts: comprehensive assessment of #ACTA with trade commissioner De Gucht and two academic experts
  6. Trade commissioner De Gucht: Europe needs #ACTA which is why we engaged in difficult negotiations #EP
  7. Commissioner De Gucht: counterfeiting and piracy costs €200 billion a year #EP #ACTA
  8. At the #ACTA workshop in the European Parliament. De Gucht thinks the agreement is great.
  9. #DeGucht: #ACTA will not require, mandate, etc etc. (does not take account of 'could' 'may') #ACTA #ACTAws
  10. De Gucht seriously hopes that other countries join #acta - although India, China, Equador, Mexico... harshly criticised the agreement.
  11. #DeGucht " #ACTA will not impose searching on laptop and mp3 players at borders" yeah, sure...
  12. Full text of ACTA
  13. Commissioner De Gucht: #ACTA will not criminalise anything that is not already illegal #EP
  14. Commissioner De Gucht about protests against #ACTA: hugely encouraging to see this level of engagement #EP
  15. Commissioner De Gucht: one message for you today - #ACTA is not an attack on your liberties #EP
  16. Trade commissioner Karel de Gucht is currently at the EP workshop discussing #ACTA - watch here bit.ly/EBSplus
  17. De Gucht: Copyright needs an update but has nothing to do with the #ACTA debate. #ACTAws (LOOOL)
  18. De Gucht done reassuring the public about #ACTA. Strangely enough, I don't feel reassured at all.
  19. Commissioner De Gucht has once again compared downloading to a theft "in the real world"... I wonder if ha has ever met a teen-ager. #ACTA
