The New York Times Subscription Spamgate

How Twitter helped clarify a spam email attack. (That later turned out not to be spam.)

  1. At around 1:30 p.m. (EST) on Dec. 28, many email inboxes were filled with an alleged email from The New York Times. The email said the user's home subscription to the paper had been cancelled and offered a 50 percent discount for 16 weeks to resubscribe. The Twitterverse immediately erupted.

GUYS, the entire world got an email seemingly from the New York Times, and every single person in my stream is ON IT.

Or was the subscription system of NYT hacked into? Or just human error? Doesn't look spam on first glance & headers say too.

@jackshafer @nytprguy @kenli729 @brianstelter The email is *not* spam — it's a screwup. Headers definitively match previous NYT messages.

The IP address and header is similar to the last email from the NYT (sent 28 Nov). Not spam for me...

The NYT email incl. headers looks pretty real. A mistake, maybe, but @nytimescomm's claim it's spam prob. to not have to honor 50% offer?

@rafat Per email to NYT newsroom staff, "The sending address is not ours. The email is spam. Please just delete it."

A spam message was sent broadly today with the subject “Important information regarding your subscription.”

  22. Or was it?

  23. Although it was originally reported that the email was spam, it later appeared this was not the case.

NY Times confirms mass subscriber email sent to 8 million people (instead of 300) was a mistake, not spam/hack: http://journ.us/up25rg
