CM Day 2011 "play by play"
My first attempt at pinning down an event through Storify. Hope you enjoy it...
- So, I've been trying to wrap my head around this tool (Storify) for a while now. And, as I was sitting at the Custom Media Day event in NYC yesterday, it occurred to me that the live conversation going on at most events (especially small ones) is a great application to catalog the event itself.
These days, everybody is connected constantly. We don't have to be reminded of that. But, one of the cooler things about attending events anymore is that you can be a part of the conversation while the event is taking place. Not only can you express your opinion and share what you thought to be interesting, you can also follow what other people found interesting and really digest the event while it is still happening. Also, that "live conversation" that is happening on Twitter is a great way to network with people that you may/may not have otherwise met while you were at the event. As a sales guy, that is clearly important to me.
Anyhow, without further ado, here's a little flavor of how the conversation developed while taking in CM Day 2011...
Joe Pulizzi led off with some stats that a number of people found to be important... On a whole, the stats evidenced the growth in confidence and usage of custom media among marketers.
The first speaker of the day, Tom Stein , talked about "The Rush Into Content Marketing". Overall, the crowd gravitated to the idea that the quality of the content is what is important, not the source.
- And finally, Tom Stein put a nice cherry on his presentation by proposing the evolution of custom publishing.
The next speaker, Elena Melendy, focused on the idea of content strategy. Content strategy is a very new discipline and one that I could tell people were enjoying Elena's methodology and detail for how to perform the craft. But my favorite line in the whole presentation was right at the beginning....
- That pretty much sums it up for me... But, there was definitely more depth there. Here is some of the other wisdom that the audience enjoyed from her speech.
Right before lunch, Jeffrey Mesnick of Socialize Your Stuff gave a nice intro to his company and talked about how to utilize social networks to make money. I also had the opportunity to have lunch with him and have a couple drinks after the event. He's a pretty funny guy too... but that's beside the point. Here are some highlights of his talk.
