Recap of "Meet the Assignment Editors" March 13 PRSA-NCC Panel.

Great tips from the March 13, 2012 PRSA-NCC panel at the Navy Memorial, Washington, DC.

  1. Here's a recap I did of yesterday's #PRSA_NCC media panel http://www.capitolcommunicator.com/Default.aspx?tabid=116&EntryID=2125
  2. Lisa Matthews from @AP "If you're a good #PR person you know what's going on in the news today [and how it relates to your org]" #PRSA_NCC
  3. RT @homiegcheesefry: Pitch a story w/ a link through twitter, suggests @washingtonpost's ginsberg.#PRSA_NCC
  4. Today's #PRSA_NCC panel featured assignment editors & planners from Washington Business Journal, AP, CBS News & Washington Post.
  5. The Washington Business Journal, Assistant Managing Editor went on to read us some of the atrocious PR pitches. I cringed. #PRSA_NCC
  6. The AP planning editor also indicated that PR pros that pitch junk or non-news get bad reputations and/or flagged. #PRSA_NCC
  7. Lastly, the Washington Post indicated that if you can tell a story with an infographic it would intrigue them. #PRSA_NCC
  8. The Washington Post asked PR Pros to "Don't think of us a news paper" and to look beyond print to their blogs and mobile sites. #PRSA_NCC
  9. One of my favorite insights was the PR pro that called CBS News on the phone and began the convo with "I need coverage." #PRSA_NCC
  10. It was pretty disheartening to hear of all the bush league stuff that #PR pros were doing when it came to pitching stories. #PRSA_NCC
  11. The Washington Post also let on that their reporters review Twitter all day & that they see Twitter as an "old fashion newswire." #PRSA_NCC
  12. One of the things I learned from this morning is that there are a lot of PR hacks and because of them, I will remain employable. #PRSA_NCC
  13. RT @homiegcheesefry: "Twitter is an old-fashioned newswire" says @washingtonpost's ginsberg. In other words, jump on it. #PRSA_NCC
  14. "If you're a good #PR person you know what's going on in the news today" -Lisa Matthews @AP #PRSA_NCC (re: what to pitch in email to editor)
  15. In email pitch subject line- keep it simple with top key words. Make it timely. #PRSA_NCC #mediarelations
  16. Subject line:"Story idea for you"? Who actually does this?? How embarrassing. #PRSA_NCC
  17. PR tip: Get a Google voice number for press contact calls. It will send you a transcript to email/text if you miss a call. #prsa_ncc
  18. Dyer reminds everyone that CBS is not *just* the Evening News. #PRSA_NCC
  19. Sending embargoed materials 2-4 days to CBS' Lois Dyers is good, on the other hand. #PRSA_NCC
  20. AP's Lisa Matthews says "I always return your phone calls...I always work to get your story placed." Don't try to go around her. #PRSA_NCC
  21. Remember AP broadcast's needs are different from AP print, reminds Matthews. #PRSA_NCC
  22. AP's Lisa Matthews wants embargoed materials 2 weeks in advance. (Surprisingly early!) #PRSA_NCC
