The Falls vs. Zarella Cage Match

Thursday afternoon was exciting in the Social Media fishbowl today. We had a genuine smack down featuring these boys. The topic: whether time of day Tweet stats and the like can be called "science" (as Zarrella likes to do). Stay tuned.

  1. In this corner: Dan "the Social Media Scientist" Zarrella
  2. And in this corner: Jason "I use the word BS a lot" Falls

  4. It all started here. A-Lister Jason Falls was live tweeting from the Tom Webster (@webby2001) session at Blog World 2011 in NY. The session - on how to cut through all the crappy data out there. Must have been provocative, because here's what Falls tweeted:

"Best time to blog" "best time to tweet" stats that you see are (my words) bullshit. @webby2001 says it more academically.

  6. Ouch! Others of course ReTweeted this statement, including this one "summoning" the almighty djinn of "Time to Tweet stats" himself, Dan Zarrella, from his Las Vegas bottle (bubble?).

Summoning @danzarrella... RT @JasonFalls: "Best time to blog" "best time to tweet" stats that you see are (my words) bullshit. @webby2001

  10. Ouch!  Zarrella hits hard - trying to imply hypocrisy. The old Two-Face Slam. Simple but effective. A whole minute and a half passes as the world waits with breathless anticipation.

@danzarrella I'm reporting from @webby2001's talk. And I've called BS on your stuff before. Using a tweet in my talk Saturday, even.

  12. Wow. "Called BS on your stuff." But even though it looks like he's saying "shhh, in a keynote here" Falls clearly wasn't finished...
  13. JasonFalls
@danzarrella And for me, it's not that your stats aren't useful or interesting, but not tested, turned to hypothesis, theories, etc.

  14. Oooh. Damning with faint praise. And rising to the challenge...
  15. danzarrella
@JasonFalls you said "your words" and yeah, you've said things about them, online only. Had plenty of time in the office.

  16. Another attempted Two-Face Slam. Getting chippy out there kids. You can almost feel Dan Zarrella's temperature rising - scientifically measured of course. And speaking of science, that's when Falls lands another body blow:
  17. JasonFalls
@danzarrella Wasn't top of mind then, I guess.. Happy to chat whenever you like. Your stuff is interesting stats. Not science.

  18. Now you have to understand that Zarrella *calls* himself the "Social Media Scientist" and loves using little icons of beakers and stuff to "science up" his analysis of social media trends on his site (http://danzarrella.com/#) and in his presentations.
  19. That move was pure Socrates. Trying to set him up with a leading question.
  20. Confusing links to Wikipedia articles? Not looking good for Falls early chances...
  21. JasonFalls
@danzarrella Key points: "testable explanations" & "body of reliable knowledge itself ... that can be logically and rationally explained"

  22. Okay, getting his feet now. Lets see what Zarrella comes back with?
