Back and Forth w/ Mathlicious re Teaching Questions

  1. I find this first act very perplexing, but not for the usual reasons. See it? 101qs.com/515 /cc @Trianglemancsd @Mathalicious
  2. @Trianglemancsd @Mathalicious It's odd that the "students" went one way (unanimously) while the "teacher" went another way.
  3. @ddmeyer @Trianglemancsd I agree. It's interesting. Still, I'm not convinced that students' first instinct is necessarily the *best* one.
  4. @Mathalicious @Trianglemancsd Yeah, I won't go all the way to "best" either but I'd rather err in that direction.
  5. @ddmeyer @Trianglemancsd Sometimes it takes prodding to get to a deeper narrative. As a teacher I'm okay with this. I'm 33. They're 12.
  6. @Mathalicious Is there a degree of prodding where you're like, "Eff it. I'm 33. They're 12. This isn't their thing."
  7. @ddmeyer @Trianglemancsd Again, just a different goal and thus different approach. Neither is best. Just diff.
  8. @Mathalicious Well, I mean, one requires more management and the other doesn't. The argument that they're the same isn't clear to me.
  9. @ddmeyer At the same time, I also think there are some times when students just need to know something (e.g. health insurance). I will do...
  10. @ddmeyer ...what I can to write it in a way that's engaging, but at some point I'm okay playing the "you need to know this" trump card.
  11. @ddmeyer I know that sounds patronizing to students but also think it goes with territory of being a teacher. A healthy presumptuousness.
