@rawfileblog: 20 tweets on debate over Haviv's Lockheed Martin ad

@rawfileblog published a thread on the debate about Ron Haviv's photographs being sold for use in advertisements by Lockheed Martin and BAE Systems. It contains 20 tweets -- well, 19, because I can't find a #17 in their timeline - summarising the unfolding, the questions, and the follow up posts.

  1. Quite appropriately, within the photoblog community, over Memorial Day Weekend, there has been wide discussion about photography and war.
  2. (2). Photobloggers - including @brookpete, @LPVMagazine & @DavidC7 - and publics demanded better journalistic approach from @duckrabbitblog.
  3. (3) @DuckRabbitBlog provided images, evidence, names, an argument & questions for @RonHaviv & @VIIPhoto about photos for Lockheed Martin Ad.
  4. (4) @RonHaviv and @VIIPhoto were quiet for some time. Maybe enjoying the holiday weekend.
  5. (5) To force the point Duck Rabbit published some screen shots of Twitter, to emphasize the rippling concern: duckrabbit.info/blog/2012/05/q…
  6. (6) Uber-blogger, Joerg Colberg, expressed his concern and interest in the matter: jmcolberg.com/weblog/2012/05…
  7. (7) @RonHaviv published his response on Sunday: ronhaviv.wordpress.com/2012/05/27/ron… (On what looks to be a purposefully set up Wordpress blog.)
  8. (8) @RonHaviv: "I draw a strict line between my photojournalism and commercial campaigns." ronhaviv.wordpress.com/2012/05/27/ron…
  9. (9) @VIIPhoto not getting involved or making public statement. Would seem it is only @RonHaviv's set of issues to respond to.
  10. (10) MT @StellaKramer [...] Ron Haviv's images & their use. We have another issue here: how closely do you control your work?
  11. (11) MT @Michaelfriberg: "Shouldn't somebody in @RonHaviv's position maybe be more vigilant about who his pictures are sold to?"
  12. (12) .@adamgasson: "Stock photos and weapons don’t kill people. People kill people." dancainey.wordpress.com/2012/05/28/duc…
  13. (13) RT @RonHaviv Here is my response to the current discussion re: advertising photography and photojournalism wp.me/p2tjZZ-B
  14. (14) .@RonHaviv "My commercial agent sold the image as stock to Lockheed Martin, which exercised its right to add smoke and text."
  15. (15) .@JannaBird: "I think it's valid that it was sold as stock - that happens all the time. But why was it on @RonHaviv's personal site?"
  16. (16) .@BagNewsNotes calls for "negotiated rules of media-military engagement." bagnewsnotes.com/2012/05/war-en…
  17. (19) Meanwhile, @MarcoBohr looks at Nachtwey's propagandist photos of Syria's ruling Assad family: visualcultureblog.com/2012/05/the-pe…
  18. (20) The conversation will hopefully be rich, honest, civil and just about the right length. (@duckrabbitblog @DavidC7 @RonHaviv @VIIPhoto)
