Patient/Caregivers: Establishing Boundaries without Barriers (#hcbwb at #SXSWi)
I participated on a panel at #SXSW in the health track (#SXSWh) regarding boundaries, patient-physician relationships, and social media. It was a great discussion (disclosure: I'm biased!) with some great audience questions and conversations. Here's some of the tweets & some additional comments from me regarding the topic.
- There was a fantastic in-person audience, plus great participation online and lots of great questions.
- (Since I was talking about the patient perspective, especially around diabetes, I figured it was fair to use social media to share my health info for the morning.)
- Ed Bennett, our moderator, kicked us off by talking about health & social media, plus his perspective of managing "The List" (one of the best data sources around hospital use of social media).
- We each introduced ourselves describing our experience/perspective on the panel. I'm a patient first, and someone who does social media/interactive/web for a non-profit health system second. (For those who don't know, I've had type 1 diabetes for 8+ years and celiac for 2+ years.)
- Dr. Jen Dyer (@EndoGoddess), is a very active endocrinologist on social media, but she uses it differently than one might think. She describes her 'boundaries' as professionalism in practice.
- Dan Goldman, legal guru at Mayo Clinic, brought the legal perspective.
- Dr. Keely Kolmes has a different perspective in private practice & mental health.
