#GillickDecodes - An Artists Twitter Panel on "Forms of Life: Liam Gillick Decodes the World"

We asked artists @Jen_Dalton, @Powhida, @gregorg, and @SteveLambert to discuss @NatoThompson's Forms of Life interview with Liam Gillick on Creative TIme Reports (http://bit.ly/WMyg0N). NOTE: A tweet may be moved out of chronological order to position it closer to the tweet it responds to.

  1. What were your initial thoughts on listening to @NatoThompson's interview with Liam Gillick on CTR? #GillickDecodes
  2. ======================Initial Thoughts======================
  3. Being practical, I listened trying to find what serves us. Self-ghettoizing doesn't. Expanding into other disciplines does… #GillickDecodes
  4. I felt that after I'd listened to it, I had a fuller understanding of being Liam. #DecodingGillick as much as #GillickDecodes
  5. First thoughts were that Gillick dismisses market influence far too quickly, retreating to the past, academia.
  6. I also thought Liam should probably read all the responses to Irving Sandler's call to critics bit.ly/VSwmbM on 'critical voice'
  7. @cmonstah oh, there's like 38 responses to Irving's call to critics here bit.ly/WiJ45A
  8. Since he's searching for a new critical voice, through speech, that isn't pseudo-academic.
  9. I think @powhida just nailed it, he's srching for a new critical voice/form/platform [Nato's term], but to what end, I couldn't tell.
  10. @gregorg @powhida I noticed LG slipped into 2nd person. Maybe that is where he'd really like to go #GillickDecodes
  11. @ArtistsReport My initial thoughts were that Liam Gillick would like to consider art in the absence of artists, or society
  12. @jen_dalton Frustrating for an artist? Or might there be a usefulness in that if one comes back with findings? #GillickDecodes
  13. @ArtistsReport I don't think I know how to look at art without considering the artist
  14. LG worries about conveying ideas about art, but also, as he said, decoding the "built environment" NG wants to fix art #GillickDecodes
  15. .@gregorg What do you think Gillick sees as broken in art at this "present moment"? #GillickDecodes
  16. 1 broken thing is default mode of self-referencing within art, instead of embracing and engaging the whole culyure #GillickDecodes
  17. yes, I got this sense, too, though neither seemed able to fix it. @stevelambert 1 broken thing: default mode of self-referencing within art,
  18. @stevelambert agree, if the idea is to diversify the art world then making art that references itself, i'm not feeling it #GillickDecodes
  19. @stevelambert Yes, but so much contemporary art is not self-referential. LG seems hung up on the bit that is #GillickDecodes
  20. .@jen_dalton yeah, but so much IS! Think about how someone without an art education reads it. That background is often req. #GillickDecodes
  21. ===================Morality vs. Sanctimony===================
  22. @ArtistsReport I am puzzled by NG's framing of the "morality" of those who critique the market vs. the "sanctimony" of some artists
