#ls_chat 11/9: Non-bench Careers and Resumes

  1. Life science professionals from industry and academia discuss careers away from the lab bench. The importance of outside coursework (not necessarily degrees) and networking was emphasized for researchers who want to move away from R&D. Resume advice was discussed and recruiter Ellen Clark of ClarkSearch gave excellent tips. The theme of finding a niche that suits your personality, and 'owning it,' was underlined by biotech professionals Ruby Gadelrab (@DivaBiotech) and Sally Church (@MaverickNY) who have both created a strong personal brand.

When I was a scientist (yes I can still remember) my image of an 'industry job' was basically blank...knew only sales people... #ls_chat

I did not 'discover' marketing until 2 years after my first job in industry, a full 6 years after PhD! #ls_chat

@Comprendia what did u think of sales ppl? ;) I think if one was outgoing and liked people it might be fun, but I'm not into sales. #ls_chat

@thecancergeek I was not uber involved with ordering stuff for the lab, so I only knew the 'pipette and glove' breed #ls_chat

i admire those who can do the non-bench work side of science. i don't think i'll ever leave the bench, though. #ls_chat

@proteinwrangler i absolutely loved benchwork, you wouldn't guess it! the solitude of being a PI did not appeal to me #ls_chat

@ls_chat I'm surprized u say academia is solitary. My PhD mentor traveled to mtgs ~3 wk/mth. My PD PI but spends 20+ hrs/wk in mtgs #ls_chat

@thecancergeek let's put it this way: my colleagues during my PD were getting jobs in the middle of nowhere...that was part of it #ls_chat

@Comprendia yeah I agree I guess the location issue is an issue for me potentially being such a city girl. #ls_chat

#ls_chat when in grad school, "knew" I wanted industry (pharma/biotech) not academics (teaching). Day to day job was mystery

@scientre I wanted to change the world - being a bench scientist was too narrow a focus for me #ls_chat

A2: I chose my marketing career based on my interests and aptitude, but it is also much more versatile than R&D #ls_chat

@comprendia Didn't think about clinical till I started running a trial, interacted with many proj/prog mgrs with science degrees #ls_chat
