#ls_chat 11/16: Life Science Funding Issues & #scifund

Ttt

  1. A lively discussion about funding issues for academic scientists and so-called 'crowdfunding' whereby researchers campaign for money for their projects. One such program, #scifund, was represented by Jai Ranganathan (@jranganathan) in this chat, and he explained that the money is never meant to replace government funding and helps scientists learn to communicate with the public. Questions about the amount of money that can be feasibly raised from the public were raised, with the conclusion that the funding model is similar to early stage biotech companies. Researchers are intrigued, but shy, and also discussed that life science companies could provide reagents and grants to help them as well. A list of life science company grants and programs we've found is at the end of the Storify. The #scifund websites are given at the top for your reference.

I've heard from researchers that they do more DIY and buy fewer kits..this seems to be a convenience, how much deeper are the cuts? #ls_chat

No offense to #SciFund, but I question if it can ever raise a sum that is actually a meaningful amount in science budget terms. #ls_chat

@BioBM For grad students, even few K very meaningful. Also, crowdfunding might well raise much larger amounts in future #ls_chat #scifund

@BioBM Also half the point of #SciFund is to improve communication between scientists and everyone else - not just about cash #ls_chat

@jhpincus You suggest we get MORE effort out of academic lab researchers? Been a while since grad school, has it? Haha... #ls_chat

@jhpincus I'm sure my PIs/lab managers didn't ever train us in efficiency, perhaps a good idea. #ls_chat

@ls_chat @BioBM Misconsception - expensive science doesn't mean better science. But institutions can earn more overheads! #ls_chat

@AsianEle True, but some data-rich life science methods (eg. sequencing, microarrays, HTS) are expensive hands-down. #ls_chat

@ls_chat @jhpincus Efficiency tends to be something one needs to figure out for oneself though. Good practices certainly!! #ls_chat

AMEN!!! PI incentive is distorted. RT @jhpincus: They don't teach the things you need to know to run a lab in grad school / postdoc #ls_chat

@ls_chat #ls_chat #1 I spent much of the last decade writing grants, only to see most of them rejected, often despite positive reviews. 1/3

#ls_chat #1 Funding decisions are generally not public, and rejected projects are thus a waste of time for everyone involved. 2/3

OK since we've started discussing #scifund let's ask Q3. What are your concerns about crowdfunding for science? #ls_chat

@nishantaditya ooh, that's some harsh words. I'd disagree that its "watered down" science. Just explained that way #ls_chat

.@thecancergeek @nishantaditya re: watering down--I think the #scifund scientists did a great job making their projects appealing.. #ls_chat

@Comprendia I agree the few I looked at looked appealing. But I guess most were not super hypothesis-driven like grants are. #ls_chat

.@thecancergeek @nishantaditya and if I were a scientist these days, it would have made me work on a more relevant problem, I think #ls_chat

@jhpincus seems like u could raise $ for a short-term study but nothing expensive. In prev lab, we spent ~$8K/mnth on just animals. #ls_chat
