#ls_chat 10/26/2011 Online Resources for Life Scientists

Twitter life science chat 10/26/2011 between researchers and companies about online resources.

  1. Topic: Online resources for life scientists: what do you need and where do you get it? We discussed publications, protocols, forums, and what life science companies can do to help.

A few resources were mentioned, but it does not appear that a killer website exists for the categories listed above, and there is still a lot of digging life scientists must do to perform their research. Stronger links between company protocols, publications, and real life applications are needed. Life scientists use Google heavily, emphasizing the need for good search engine optimization. Brands mentioned favorably: Abcam, Cayman and Benchfly.
Additionally, Twitter was mentioned as a resource for scientists, life science companies could easily grab this 'low hanging fruit' by offering themselves more freely to answer questions.

For my work for clients, I've tried many different 'repackagings' of Pubmed (pubget etc.), but always go back to it #ls_chat

I have to agree with @comprendia - I usually find myself back @ pubmed for hard searches if Google doesn't answer right away. #ls_chat

@thecancergeek When PubMed fails on specific papers I use ScienceDIrect or Web Of Knowledge. They are OK, but... PubMed, basically. #ls_chat

In pubmed, I like the saved searches and in my profile, like the automated updates I have it send me every Monday on my topics. #ls_chat

Pubmed & Highwire. Quertle has cool features but I still haven't found a compelling reason to switch from pubmed for most searches. #ls_chat

Frustrated with the RSS feed from Pubmed--it sometimes works with Feedburner emails, sometimes not. Makes bulk updates difficult #ls_chat

Seems @f1000 @citeulike or @mendeley_com should be able to send me daily emails w/pub updates around a broad topic, none can #ls_chat

In terms of pubs, I also get the eTOCs for the major journals I'm interested in, both as emails and RSS feeds. #ls_chat

RT @27andaphd: @Comprendia I can't google things for papers/references. I go directly to the source, ie. Pubmed #ls_chat
