- Adam Greenfield is the author of Everyware: The Dawning Age of Ubiquitous Computing, former head of design direction for service and user-interface design at Nokia, and now runs his New York City-based practice Urbanscale. Greenfield will talk about urban experience design, addressing the growing range of connected objects in the urban landscape, from CCTV cameras, sensor-equipped bus stops and networked bollards to Tower Bridge and its Twitter account. He will consider what life among these con
What happens when new technologies infiltrate the city? How should we think about them? Adam's research is an attempt to make sure that emergent technologies do not cut against the way cities evolve and are used.
Ubiquitous computing was first articulated by Mark Weiser.
There was no book on the subject so Adam wrote Everyware as an introduction:
- This led into an interest in networked urbanism - How can we define and design the use of technology in the built environment so that it meets the needs of people as they move through the space?

- We already live in the networked city:
We already carry super computers: mobile phones are an instant of the network in every person's pocket. If you are not designing for this 'networked now' you are failing.
There is already a widespread adoption of declarative technology around location (foursquare etc) which can be searched and analyzed (but also used for creative projects):

I’ve written before about how wonderful Twitter can be as a messaging bus for physical objects. The idea of overhearing machines talking about what they’re doing is, to my mind, quite delightful. So when I found an untapped data source for such an object, I thought it was worth having a poke. Half an hour of scripting later and Tower Bridge was on Twitter. It tells you when it’s opening and closing, wh...Do we need a new theory of public objects to help us us understand how we think about them? Some illustrative systems:
