Adam Greenfield: Connected Things and Civic Responsibilities

A Festival of Ideas event in association with Digital Cultures Research Centre, UWE Bristol and the Pervasive Media Studio.

  1. "Toward a fabric of freely discoverable, addressable, queryable and scriptable urban resources"

  2. Adam Greenfield is the author of Everyware: The Dawning Age of Ubiquitous Computing, former head of design direction for service and user-interface design at Nokia, and now runs his New York City-based practice Urbanscale. Greenfield will talk about urban experience design, addressing the growing range of connected objects in the urban landscape, from CCTV cameras, sensor-equipped bus stops and networked bollards to Tower Bridge and its Twitter account. He will consider what life among these con

  4. What happens when new technologies infiltrate the city? How should we think about them? Adam's research is an attempt to make sure that emergent technologies do not cut against the way cities  evolve and are used.

  5. Ubiquitous computing was first articulated by Mark Weiser.

  6. There was no book on the subject so Adam wrote Everyware as an introduction:

  7. This led into an interest in networked urbanism -  How can we define and design the use of technology in the built environment so that it meets the needs of people as they move through the space?

    Influenced by:

  8. We already live in the networked city:
  9. We already carry super computers: mobile phones are an instant of the network in every person's pocket. If you are not designing for this 'networked now' you are failing.

  10. There is already a widespread adoption of declarative technology around location (foursquare etc) which can be searched and analyzed (but also used for creative projects):

  11. Do we need a new theory of public objects to help us us understand how we think about them? Some illustrative systems:

  12. Valkky Traffic sensors in Finland:

Unobjectionable: These sensors gather data locally and produce immediate social good (reducing traffic accidents) within the direct locality

  13. Interactive Nikon advert in Seoul.
A mildly unpleasant intrusion in public space

  14. Worrying Acure vending machine in Tokyo

Predicting behaviours and encouraging normative behaviors.
