Breaking Bad fans place Walter White Obituary in Albuquerque newspaper

  1. A still-mourning group of Breaking Bad fans are honouring the legacy of a television icon this week with a newspaper obituary for main character Walter White, who (Spoiler alert, if our headline didn't give it away already) recently died at the end of the series.

The fans, who hail from Alberquerque, New Mexico where the show was set, paid to take out an ad in section 4A of today’s Albuquerque Journal.

"WHITE, WALTER aka “Heisenberg,” 52, of Albuquerque, died Sunday after a long battle with lung cancer, and a gunshot wound." reads the obit. "A co-founder of Gray Matter, White was a research chemist who taught high school chemistry, and later founded a meth manufacturing empire. He is survived by his wife, Skyler Lambert; son Walter “Flynn” Jr.; and daughter Holly. A private memorial was held by his family. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a drug abuse prevention charity of your choice. He will be greatly missed."
  2. Fellow highschool science teacher and hardcore Breaking Bad fan Dave Layman of Alberquerque spearheaded the effort through an active local Facebook page called "Unofficial Breaking Bad Fan Tour."

"I’ve been a humongous ‘Breaking Bad’ fan since the beginning,” Layman told the Albuquerque Journal. “I was actually in the pilot, and putting the obit in the paper was fitting, because the series was based in Albuquerque and it provides some of us some closure.”
  3. While Layman produced the ad on his own, he had plenty of support from other fans in the Facebook group to actually purchase the ad space.

"This is what I just received from the lady at the ABQ Journal," he wrote on the Facebook group Oct. 2. "She said she is a huge fan of the show and would put the obit in, but not in the Obit section. You can see it won't be cheap, but if anyone is willing to chip in anything, I'd greatly appreciate it..."

    Responses flew in immediately.

"Count me in! Where should I send in my donation?" wrote Eve Candelaria. Kevin B. Lederer responded with "We will pitch in for sure. PayPal? Fun way to end."

"Hey guys -- if we all donate just a few bucks, Dave will be totally reimbursed and we'll be part of a fantastic memorial," wrote Steph Walker. "Plus when it hits Reddit, and you know it will, you can say you played a part in the ad! Even a couple of dollars help."

And hit Reddit it did, along with many other blogs, news aggregates, and social media channels.
  4. "Dave Layman you sir are think of the "obit" in the ABQ Journal, and then having them actually doing the story of WW is such a genius idea," wrote one of the obituary contributors in the Facebook group. "Breaking Bad will continue because of people like you. Thanks again!!!"
