  3. According to Cover Asia Press, Rupa and four other Indian women who survived acid attacks — Rita, Sonam, Laxmi and Chanchal — were photographed by New Delhi-based Rahul Saharan.

All of the women wore clothing by Rupa from her budding collection Rupa Designs that made its debut in the photo series.

"I always wanted to be a designer but after the attack there was a pause in my life. I was so insecure and embarrassed by my scars, I used to cover my face with a scarf," Rupa told the news agency. "I always hung onto my dream but I never knew that one day it would be possible and I would be launching my own label."

  7. Rupa was reportedly attacked by her stepmother while she was asleep, according to Cover Asia Press.
  8. She has since become a crusader for New Delhi-based NGO Stop Acid Attacks, which is devoted to the recovery of survivors of acid attacks and was instrumental in organizing the photo shoot.

"I have always loved fashion and tailoring but I never thought I could start my own label. This is the first time I have presented my clothes and I am glad to see them being appreciated," Rupa told Cover Asia Press.

  10. Saharan, who SAA reached out to for the shoot, told Cover Asia Press that he was floored by the positive reaction and felt "blessed to have got this exclusive opportunity."

"I have been associated with Chhaon for the last two-and-a-half years, but this is the first time I feel like I've put my skills to good use to help these lovely girls," he said.

  18. SAA is encouraging people to back Rupa in a crowdfunding campaign (indiegogo campaign for backers outside of India) to help get her business off the ground.

Update: In a Facebook post, SAA wrote that its crowdfunding campaign had exceeded its goal 13 days before its scheduled end.
  19. "I just hope the orders come in; it would be a dream come true to make this my work," Rupa told Cover Asia Press. "The last six years have been tough, so if I can set up my own boutique and work towards becoming financially independent, then anyone can. I never imagined my dreams could come true but now I believe anything is possible."
