Newt takes on mainstream media. And Twitter takes the bait.

CNN’s John King opened Thursday’s GOP debate with a question for Newt Gingrich about his ex-wife’s recent claims that he requested an “open” marriage. The former House speaker railed against “destructive, vicious, negative nature of much of the news media.” Here's how Twitter responded:

  1. Some observers – notably those in the media who might guide coverage of the debate – worried that Gingrich's flashy lashing out at King would overshadow the meat of the policy debate that followed:
  2. #CNNDebates No one in press room listening as they mentally draft their leads about Newt's attack on media, and how he won the debate
  3. Newt is one of the few Republicans out there who can go toe-to-toe with the mainstream media. #cnndebate
  4. Others, like political consultant and former Bill Clinton aide Paul Begala, couldn't resist a joke or two:
  5. Newt yells at John King, calls him "close to despicable." True. King is standing very close to Gingrich. #cnndebate
  6. "I was unfaithful to my wife, and when people talk about this fact it just means that the mainstream media is protecting Obama!" Newt. Dude.
  7. The only mainstream media I trust is the Weather Channel.
  8. It is ALL JOHN KING'S FAULT that Newt Gingrich screwed around on his wives. #CNNdebate
  9. All kidding aside, each candidate tonight had his supporters. Starting with former White House press secretary under George W. Bush, Ari Fleischer:
  10. Romney is on fire tonight i would not want to be Newt.
