ICIRR's One Nation, One Dream Advocacy Day

The Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights gathered hundreds of advocates to lobby against recent proposed state budget cuts and in support of state DREAM Act at the Statehouse Capitol rotunda Thursday, March 3, 2011.

  3. Activists from Chicago's Immigrant Youth Justice League exit the bus after their three-hour ride to Springfield and gather signs and materials to prepare for their lobbying day.

  4. Interfaith Leadership Project organizer Arturo Gonzalez says blocking the 74 percent cuts to immigrant services is a top priority today.
  5. People are gathering in the rotunda and the @icirr rally is about to start. About 700 people are registered to participate today.
  6. Several state legislators have come out in support of those gathered at the @icirr rally.
  7. Gov. Pat Quinn's budget cuts, if passed, could cuts services for immigrants and refugees by 74 percent. Activists here are also meeting with lawmakers to discuss passing a state DREAM Act that would provide higher education funds to children of illegal immigrants.
  8. "Stand with me as we elect candidates of our choice, who are accountable to us," says Tuyet Le of Asian-American Institute at @icirr rally.
  9. Alaa Mukahhal, an undocumented resident and member of Chicago's Immigrant Youth Justice League, talks about her experience lobbying for the Illinois DREAM Act.

  10. "We don't ask for much. Other than a chance. A chance to pursue our dreams," says Carla Navoa, DREAM Act advocate.
