BIM4 launch in Melbourne

BIM Academy and Point Advisory join forces to launch a client focused BIM network aiming to cut through the BIM jargon and talk openly and candidly about what value BIM can bring for Clients. We kicked off the series with this mornings #BIM4clients event.

  1. Two fantastic speakers delivered informative presentations at our first BIM4 event, to an intimate senior client crowd in Melbourne on 12 August 2016. We heard from Adriana Sanchez Gomez (SBEnrc) talking about the group’s research into metrics for BIM return on investment (ROI), and demonstrating the financial benefits of BIM on projects. Adriana concluded her talk with some case studies from across the globe. We then heard from Simon Vaux from Transport for NSW (TfNSW), who has been working to set out a digital strategy for TfNSW. Simon shared his candid experiences and lessons learnt from engaging with and getting buy-in from a wide range of disparate stakeholders
  2. Adriana introduced us to the work that has been carried out by the team at SBEnrc into demonstrating the Value of BIM, through a whole-life-cycle approach. Adriana stressed the importance of starting with the end goal or end benefit in mind, for example: what, as a client, do you want to achieve in terms of benefits or savings; how will these be measured; and how can BIM be used to achieve these targets? The earlier the strategic goals and benefits are identified the greater the level of return a client will achieve on a project through the implementation of BIM. The upgrade to the great Eastern Highway was included as a case study, demonstrating, amongst other wins, how the use of BIM tools contributed to $24 million in savings (14% of the total project cost). This project came in at $7 million under the target budget and the project was completed 3 months ahead of schedule. Adriana concluded her presentation by highlighting the key BIM value resources available from SBEnrc, including a free decision-support tool for maximising the benefits of BIM across the asset life-cycle.   3. Simon Vaux gave us a real client insight into the development of TfNSW’s Digital Engineering strategy and framework. He highlighted the siloed nature of the organisation and the numerous systems and stakeholders under the Digital Engineering remit. Simon described the enormity of public sector investment in transport infrastructure and the importance of effective information management for data use and reuse. Simon described BIM as a “rubbery concept” and that the power of BIM comes from the association of information to objects within object based models. He stressed the importance of structured data and data classification systems, before drawing comparisons between the traditional methods of producing information and the inefficiencies and waste caused by information loss and rework. The Digital Engineering Approach includes four key elements: a standard coding system; the use of open data formats; a common data environment (CDE); and standardised object-based models.
