I traveled to Oakland, California with Simran Sethi's green journalism class where we installed a residential greywater system and explored water conservation and justice. We shared our experiences on Twitter and encouraged others to join our discussion using the hashtag #kuh20.
We met with plastic-free blogger Beth Terry [@PlasticfreeBeth], who talked about plastic pollution issues in our oceans. We interviewed Terry for a Metropolis Magazine blog post.
- @PlasticfreeBeth: Average American generates 100 lbs of plastic per person per year. (She's down to 2 lbs! Inspiring.) #KUH20
- @plasticfreebeth questions if public knows what happens to #recyclables after collected + stresses importance of education. #kuh20
We discussed the history of environmental justice with CEH's [@4envirohealth] environmental health and justice program director Christine Cordero.
- @4envirohealth #environmentaljustice is a river made of tributaries: civil rights of race and dignity. #kuh20
- @4envirohealth offers people of color piece on principles of environmental #justice. #grassroots #kuh20 [photo] http://twitpic.com/4bvo1g
- @4envirohealth says when you involve people is just as important as how you involve them. #community + environmental #justice. #kuh20
- Nice: "I'm an environmentalist but I like to hug trees and people." Christine Cordero from @4EnviroHealth #KUH20
We visited Breuner Marsh, a shoreline near Richmond, California. The lesson: water justice has multiple meanings.
- having discussion on #richmond #shoreline access. #waterjustice #kuh20 [photo] http://twitpic.com/4bx52g
- Not even a little #plasticpollution can ruin my trip to Richmond. Shame though. #KUH2O http://twitpic.com/4bxdcg
