Kristi's Gift at Baylor University Medical Center
NBC DFW anchor Kristi Nelson donated a kidney to her mother, who was suffering from kidney disease. On the day of the organ donation surgery at Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas, another NBC DFW anchor, Deborah Ferguson, live tweeted from the operating room. Below is a timeline of the day's events.
The day before surgery, Kristi and her mother allowed NBC cameras to follow them to their final pre-operative appointments at Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas.
The NBC news crew met with BaylorHealth PR at 4:30 a.m. to strategize and get in position for the upcoming events.
It was great seeing the reaction to Kristi's presence from inside the surgery waiting area. The TVs were all set to NBC 5, and you could hear whispers of "Is that her?" and "There they are!"
And the surgeries began. Kristi went in first and then her mother was wheeled in an hour later. BaylorHealth PR took NBC's Deborah Ferguson into the surgery room where both stayed for the duration. Deborah Ferguson tweeted live updates from @NBCDFW while @BaylorHealth tweeted supplemental information about kidney disease, organ donation, and the doctors performing the surgery.
