Convention on Conventional Weapons
This Storify shows how a remarkable alliance of governments, UN agencies, ICRC, and NGOs worked to reject a US-led proposal to create a new international law permitting cluster munitions via the Convention on Conventional Weapons, at its fourth review conference held in Geneva from 14-25 Nov. 2011.
- INTRO - The past three years have seen impressive progress in the effort to eradicate cluster bombs as 111 states embrace the Convention on Cluster Munitions and begin implementing its comprehensive provisions. Yet the United States and other nations that have not joined the cluster bomb ban have persisted in pushing via the Convention on Conventional Weapons for a contrary and weaker international law permitting these weapons. This Storify prepared by @marywareham records the campaign's engagement and government actions in the CCW's Fourth Review Conference, where the cluster bombs protocol was finally rejected on 25 November 2011.
- PREPARATION - In the weeks and months leading up to the CCW's Fourth Review Conference, the battle lines have been drawn and members of the Cluster Munition Coalition (CMC) have been engaging on the issue, including through the media, letters to decision-makers, parliamentary outreach.
- AVAAZ PETITION - On Thursday 10 November, Avaaz launched a petition to its mailing list of 10 million calling for the ban on cluster bombs to be protected. In less than 24 hours more than a quarter of a million people worldwide had taken action, smashing the initial target of 100,000 signatures.
