Best beginner resources on HTML/CSS

I asked folks for recommendations on what books and resources on HTML/CSS are good for beginners. Here are the best responses. (I'm leaving out books I think are more for intermediate users, like the A Book Apart books.)

@aworkinglibrary I really found books by @simplebits to be super helpful when starting out. I still refer to many of the today!

@aworkinglibrary I found "Transcending CSS" to be a good followup for folks who'd taken an HTML class but still thought in layout, not code.

@aworkinglibrary I found Sam's to be the most helpful when I first started teaching myself and knew nothing — http://www.amazon.com/Sams-Teach-Yourself-Hours-Coverage/dp/0672330970/ref=dp_ob_title_bk

@aworkinglibrary For CSS I like Chris Coyier's site. Just noodling through the videos and trying out the snippets is tremendously helpful.
