#MLKChallenge15 at Augustana

Augustana students, faculty and staff took Saturday, Jan. 17, and made it a day of service. Inspired by the work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., they completed group challenges based on local community needs. Here are their experiences with the MLK Challenge.

  1. For St. Francis House, an Augustana team made dinner for nine families -- about 50 people. The team created the menu and shopped for supplies.
  2. At Compassionate Care Hospice, an Augustana team made trail mix for 70 hospice patients, then delivered the bags and visited with those who live in Sioux Falls.
  3. At Heartland House, an Augustana team made 46 key holders to be placed on the wall inside apartment doors. Heartland House has 46 apartments.
  4. A fourth Augustana team collected 110 items of donated clothing through the residence halls, then sorted and priced other items for the Center of Hope's winter clothing store.
  5. In addition to their projects, each group performed Random Acts of Kindness throughout the day. Participants also were challenged to pledge 100 hours of service for the year 2015. The total number of hours pledged for the next year: 1,501.
