#auddev impromptu chat 7/20/12

I had a quick chat about being more available to your audiences by having a "go to them" mentality. Also, the topic of connecting the dots between current opportunities and building audiences came up.

  1. My coffee kicked in big time this morning! Anyone up for an on the fly #auddev discussion?
  2. I've been thinking about the putting yourself out there approach vs. let them come to us. #auddev
  3. Simply placing an ad for an event is a let them come to us mentality for the most part. #auddev
  4. Having all your events in a particular venue could also be considered a let them come to us approach. #auddev
  5. I am seeing that the more outreach programs/events an artist or org has, the better off they seem to be. #auddev
  6. It also may be a matter of putting yourself out there where your audience can find you and respond to you. #auddev
  7. The big question is, what are you currently doing to put yourself out there? #auddev Please share!
  8. I think a major problem we have in the #arts is that we are not connecting the dots from opportunities to building audiences. #auddev
  9. .@AudienceDevSpec Totally! There are so many things that are easy and fast to follow up with people and continue the relationship.
  10. @AudienceDevSpec Can you give an example of not connecting the dots from opportunities to building audiences?
  11. I had given the example of how opera companies are not taking advantage of the Met HD events.
  12. @AudienceDevSpec Might be a $$ issue. The Met could do it because they can afford great casts & stars to get people to buy the thing, no?
  13. I replied it was more a matter of doing the outreach programs in connection with the Met HD events, not necessarily setting up their own HD events.
  14. .@AudienceDevSpec The one that kills me is not following up with first-time buyers.
  15. .@TRGArts @padablemont It's a matter of being more aware of current opportunities that are out there to connect with. #auddev
  16. @padablemont @TRGArts Another example is when they do not follow up (or find ways to follow up) after an outreach event. #auddev
  17. @TRGArts Yes, that is a killer. Not following up with 1st time buyers is a telling tale. #auddev
  18. @AudienceDevSpec Yes, and thinking about the relationship from the patron's point of view, rather than a "my campaign" POV. #auddev
  19. @TRGArts That is why I put it in the "let them come to us" vs. outreach to them question. #auddev
  20. Seriously, we need to ask the questions: Where are our audiences? How can I go to them? How can I follow up and follow through? #auddev
  21. @AudienceDevSpec @TRGArts That's true. Not following up is wasting an opportunity to keep in touch.
  22. @AudienceDevSpec When you say outreach, do you refer to outreach events (post-show disccussions, etc) or contacting them--or both? #auddev
  23. @padablemont Actually, it's a matter of piggybacking onto their events. I have done this before. No $ needed except printing. #auddev
  24. For a creative industry, we are not getting creative enough about outreach opportunities. Look around, there are tons there! #auddev
  25. @TRGArts In that tweet, I was thinking of as event, etc., but it does carry over to contacting them too, of course. ;O) #auddev
