11 clever meteor tweets we wish we'd thought of

You've heard the news about the meteor (not meteorite or asteriod) that caused an enormous explosion in Russia. But perhaps your reservoir of space jokes is suffering a drought. Not to fear. If there's one thing Twitter excels at, it's humor in the face of calamity.

  1. At first, media companies struggled to find the right words to describe the event. Literally. The right words.
  2. Note from desk: "A meteoroid is a rock in space; a meteor is a rock that's hit our atmosphere; a meteorite is a rock that's hit the ground."
  3. Doug might also be unimpressed.
  4. Could be bigger deal RT @AP: BREAKING: Interfax says nearly 1,000 people injured by falling meteor in Russia, according to officials
  5. There were more than 115,000 tweets posted about the meteor in just a couple of hours. Twitter had predictably (but not literally) exploded.
  6. More people should be talking about this "Meteor" that hit in Russia
  7. BREAKING NEWS: Baby found in the middle of the Meteorite crash site, he is miraculously unharmed. Wrapped in what seems to be a red cape.
  8. Remember back in 2008 when former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin said she could see Russia from her house?
  9. I live in Alaska and I could not see that meteor from my house. #justsayin
  10. Technically some guy would have probably said something like, "этот день не может быть хуже," which isn't very funny unless you speak Russian.
  11. I like to think that just before that meteor hit, some guy in Russia said, "This day couldn't get any worse."
  12. No response from @PiersMorgan. Yet. Maybe Paul should have included a remark about his right to own a gun to protect himself from said meteor.
  13. Typical. A giant meteor hurtles to Earth and completely misses Piers Morgan.
  14. Remember when Marco Rubio's water bottle became a "thing" on Twitter? @JakeFogelnest is on a personal mission to stop parody accounts. Where do we sign up?
  15. Hello, this is @jakefogelnest. As a public service, I have registered this Twitter account to prevent another parody account.
  16. .@MeatierRussian Whatever your first joke is, don't write it.
  17. Thanks to Scott for bringing it full circle.
  18. All this meteor-related violence clearly stems from our cultural obsession with shoot-'em-up video games like ASTEROIDS.
