Transcript of Q&A chat on November 2, 2011 from editors Megan Records of Kensington and Angela James of Carina Press.
- Get your #askeditor questions ready! @meganrecords & I are going to do a Q&A session at 1pm EST today!
- .@meganrecords & I are ready for your #askeditor questions. We'll do our best to answer all (appropriate) questions.Don't forget to use tag!
- Ok lovelies, I'm here! Remember my main expertise is in romance, some YA. Knowledge of other genres varies. #askeditor
- @angelajames Hi Angela and @meganrecords , I was wondering if you ever recommend an Agent to a potential author you want to sign? #askeditor
- @TinaHamilton3 choosing an agent is such an individual thing, that's not something I'm comfortable doing. I like many agents! #askeditor
- @angelajames @tinahamilton3 Ditto on her answer. Plus, there are many great agents I just haven't had change to work with yet. #askeditor
- @meganrecords @angelajames What would you like to see more of? What are you seeing too much of? #askeditor
- @writertay I want more contemporaries! I have so many PNR and hist authors already that it's hard to find new stuff. #askeditor
- @DQuincyRomance @writertay I'd like to see more steampunk, science fiction, fantasy (rom or not), historicals & contemporaries #askeditor
- We do see a lot of romantic suspense and paranormal romance, but I'm always willing to see more #askeditor
- #askeditor..what is the absolute worst thing a writer can do when approaching you to see if you are interested in their work?
- @TinaHamilton3 oh man, just one thing? I was complaining today about ppl sending us YA. We don't even PUBLISH YA. #askeditor
- @TinaHamilton3 other than that, treating the editor/agent as your own personal research tool isn't a great way to start either. #askeditor
- @angelajames After sending a follow up email, how long should an author wait before sending another or just wait some more? #askeditor
- @sofiaharp it differs for every publisher/editor/agent but we try to respond to emails (not subs) within a week. #askeditor
- @sofiaharp I think you have to give 2 weeks to be safe...not everyone checks email on vaca, etc. #askeditor
- I'm working on a regency inspirational. I've been reading several publishers recent pubs. What else should I take a look at? #askeditor
- @AmyPfaffAuthor customer service, how their website looks, do a Google search for author/reader complaints #askeditor
- @angelajames @meganrecords #askeditor My current WIP heroine has a chronic illness as part of the story. Is that acceptable to publish?
- @j_j_stephens it's all in the execution! And if it's a romance, it's also all in the...how will you sell a happy for now? #askeditor
- @j_j_stephens I don't see why not. Though obviously some chronic illnesses are less sexy than others. #askeditor
- I have a ms for a contemp. rom. that I put aside: What is a typical word count range for the genre? (Are 'novellas' ever pubbed?) #askeditor
- @word_working novellas are very popular in digital publishing. If you want it to go novel size, then 70-100k, depending on pub #askeditor
- @word_working Single title is 80k or more, series romance is somewhere 55k-65k. #askeditor
