#askeditor from @meganrecords & @angelajames

Transcript of Q&A chat on November 2, 2011 from editors Megan Records of Kensington and Angela James of Carina Press.

  1. Get your #askeditor questions ready! @meganrecords & I are going to do a Q&A session at 1pm EST today!
  2. .@meganrecords & I are ready for your #askeditor questions. We'll do our best to answer all (appropriate) questions.Don't forget to use tag!
  3. Ok lovelies, I'm here! Remember my main expertise is in romance, some YA. Knowledge of other genres varies. #askeditor
  4. @angelajames Hi Angela and @meganrecords , I was wondering if you ever recommend an Agent to a potential author you want to sign? #askeditor
  5. @TinaHamilton3 choosing an agent is such an individual thing, that's not something I'm comfortable doing. I like many agents! #askeditor
  6. @angelajames @tinahamilton3 Ditto on her answer. Plus, there are many great agents I just haven't had change to work with yet. #askeditor
  7. @writertay I want more contemporaries! I have so many PNR and hist authors already that it's hard to find new stuff. #askeditor
  8. @DQuincyRomance @writertay I'd like to see more steampunk, science fiction, fantasy (rom or not), historicals & contemporaries #askeditor
  9. We do see a lot of romantic suspense and paranormal romance, but I'm always willing to see more #askeditor
  10. #askeditor..what is the absolute worst thing a writer can do when approaching you to see if you are interested in their work?
  11. @TinaHamilton3 oh man, just one thing? I was complaining today about ppl sending us YA. We don't even PUBLISH YA. #askeditor
  12. @TinaHamilton3 other than that, treating the editor/agent as your own personal research tool isn't a great way to start either. #askeditor
  13. @angelajames After sending a follow up email, how long should an author wait before sending another or just wait some more? #askeditor
  14. @sofiaharp it differs for every publisher/editor/agent but we try to respond to emails (not subs) within a week. #askeditor
  15. @sofiaharp I think you have to give 2 weeks to be safe...not everyone checks email on vaca, etc. #askeditor
  16. I'm working on a regency inspirational. I've been reading several publishers recent pubs. What else should I take a look at? #askeditor
  17. @AmyPfaffAuthor customer service, how their website looks, do a Google search for author/reader complaints #askeditor
  18. @angelajames @meganrecords #askeditor My current WIP heroine has a chronic illness as part of the story. Is that acceptable to publish?
  19. @j_j_stephens it's all in the execution! And if it's a romance, it's also all in the...how will you sell a happy for now? #askeditor
  20. @j_j_stephens I don't see why not. Though obviously some chronic illnesses are less sexy than others. #askeditor
  21. I have a ms for a contemp. rom. that I put aside: What is a typical word count range for the genre? (Are 'novellas' ever pubbed?) #askeditor
  22. @word_working novellas are very popular in digital publishing. If you want it to go novel size, then 70-100k, depending on pub #askeditor
  23. @word_working Single title is 80k or more, series romance is somewhere 55k-65k. #askeditor
