Celebs, Politicans Rally to Stop Troy Davis Execution
Nobel Peace Prize recipients, celebrities, musicians, the Pope, a former president (and probably your neighbor) rally to stop the execution of Troy Davis.
The scheduled execution of Troy Davis, despite severe doubts about his guilt, has inspired opposition to his death sentence from a wide variety of prominent people. Three Nobel Peace Prize laureates (including former President Jimmy Carter and Archbishop Desmond Tutu) have called for clemency in this case, as has the Pope. Recently, four dozen Members of Congress weighed in as well.
Figures who are pro death penalty have added their voices in support of clemency. A former Governor of Texas, Mark White, who oversaw 19 executions, has written a letter, as has Larry Thompson, the former Deputy Attorney General under John Ashcroft. Norman Fletcher, a former Georgia Supreme Court Justice who once voted to uphold Troy Davis' conviction, now believes he should be spared from execution, as does William Sessions, a former Director of the FBI. And Bob Barr, the former Georgia Congressman who helped write the Anti-terrorism and Effective Death Penalty act (AEDPA, the law that restricts the appeals process in death penalty cases) also agrees that executing Troy Davis would be wrong. He said so just yesterday on Al Sharpton's MSNBC show:Numerous celebrities have also supported clemency, including musicians Russell Simmons, Joan Baez, Steve Earle, Cee-Lo Green, Tom Morello, John Legend and Harry Belafonte, and actors Miriam Margolyes, Tim Roth, Mike Farrell, Susan Sarandon, Jared Leto, and Mia Farrow (among many others!). L.A. based artist Chaz Guest painted Troy Davis. Richard Hughes from the band Keane, and the band State Radio have played an especially important role in spreading the word about the case, and providing support for Troy Davis himself. Check out State Radio's powerful video:
That such a wide diversity of people find common ground in believing the Troy Davis should NOT be executed is a sign of how deep the doubts that still plague his case are, and how grave and profound an injustice the execution of Troy Davis would be. You can also take action to help stop the execution. Or find out more ways to get involved:
Don’t Let Georgia Kill Troy DavisThe day is now here - the state of Georgia has set Troy Davis' execution date for September 21st. The U.S. Supreme Court refused to hear his final appeal earlier this year. But the story remains the same - Troy Davis could very well be innocent.
