RC Economics Reading Group - Spring 2016

Group read and discussed Hayek's "Road to Serfdom" and traveled to DC to meet with experts at the Mercatus Center, Heritage Foundation, and American Enterprise Institute...plus an Economic Freedom Scavenger Hunt. This is our story. #RCdoesDC #SP2016 @RoanokeCollege @roanokeecon

  1. The reading group met on the Thursday evening before our trip to DC to eat pizza, watch an interview with Milton Friedman on F.A. Hayek's Road to Serfdom, and outline the upcoming DC road trip.
  2. Milton Friedman on Hayek's "Road to Serfdom" 1994 Interview 1 of 2
  3. Milton Friedman explains F.A. Hayek's "Road to Serfdom" (Part 1 of an interview). We watched this as a group over pizza before going to Washington DC.
  4. Milton Friedman on Hayek's "Road to Serfdom" 1994 Interview 2 of 2
  5. Milton Friedman explains F.A. Hayek's "Road to Serfdom" (Part 2 of an interview)

  6. Day 1 of Washington DC trip
  7. We drove from Salem to the Mercatus Center in Arlington, VA for our first visit with Scholar Matthew Mitchell. Mitchell talked about Hayek and his own book Pathology of Privilege. Student got information about graduate school, scholarships, and research opportunities at Mercatus and GMU.
  8. Next we used the Metro to get into DC (the RC van is too tall to park in the city, so we parked it at Union Station and headed in via public transportation.)
  9. After some downtime we met RC alums at Vapiano's in DC for dinner.

  10. Day 2 of Washington DC trip
  11. Team work getting the tie right!
  12. After our trip to Heritage we had lunch in Union Station and then the students headed out on the first RC Economic Freedom Scavenger Hunt (using the Goosechase app). Two teams competed for Amazon.com gift cards.
  13. Mission 1: Located between Peace and Garfield Circles, economic policies are discussed and voted upon in this iconic building. Take a picture of at least one teammate in front of this location having a "capitol" time.
