1. The origins of hookah date back over a thousand years to the north western provinces of India along the boarder of Pakistan. At the time, hookahs were fairly simple with crude designs and usually made from coconut shells. Originally used to smoke opium and hashish, hookahs are currently used to smoke a flavored tobacco known as "Naklia shisha". Shisha is a combination of foreign tobaccos, honey molasses and dried fruit.
  2. Eventually, the hookah made its way through most of Middle Asia and the Arab parts of northern Africa. Once the hookah made it's way to Turkey, almost 500 years ago, the middle class saw it as a great way to pass time and entertain guests. It grew in size and shape, better resembling how it looks today with brass and glass detailing and intricate designs.

  4. Hookah is currently popular among college students and young adults. Juxtaposing the harsh stigma carried by cigarettes, hookah was seen as social, relaxed, and inviting. USA Today wrote an article back in 2005 about the rising popularity of hookah and how the tradition was quickly spreading from a cultural niche or mainstream use. Even today, hookah shops are growing by the numbers in popular college towns and city hubs. A simple Yelp search for Hookah places in Washington DC yields over 200 results and over 650 in New York City. It's undeniable that many young people are engaging with the traditional tobacco pipe.
