Criticism turns to the US as Chen Guangcheng leaves embassy

Social media users in China and abroad rally in support of blind dissident who fled house arrest.

  1. Chen reportedly injured himself during his flight from house arrest. Below are pictures showing Chen in Chaoyang hospital in Beijing. The hospital is now heavily guarded and Chen says no US officials have remained with him at the hospital as they had promised.
  2. 网友上传的医院照片,一个公民到医院看病,当局用得着搞这么大的排场么? http://pic.twitter.com/B4p3xY4o
  3. #Chen disputing US account of deal, tells @StanGrantCNN that the US let him down, was not given the whole story before left embassy
  4. Teng Biao (@tengbiao), Chen's lawyer, had a series of telephone conversations with Chen from around 8:30 pm to 10:15 pm when he was in hospital. According to their telephone messages, Teng advised Chen to call the US embassy to make his wishes clear. Chen says that the tried, but no one picked up the phone.
  5. Channel 4 News journalists spoke to Chen in hospital.
  6. #c4news asked Chen Guangcheng - Did you go to the hospital because of medical emergency?..Answer-(1/2) No. I came because of an agreement.
  7. (2/2) I was worried about the safety of my family. A gang of them have taken over our house, sitting in our room and eating at our table.
  8. Chen Guangcheng goes on to say - My biggest wish is to leave the country with my family and rest for a while. I haven't had a Sunday in 7yrs

  13. If Twitter didn't exist, we'd still be celebrating Chen's release. Now harder to question Twitter's importance in China.
  14. The Chen case is going to be an amazing case study of disconnect between Twitter pace and policy&business pace, and whether it matters.
  15. The cruelty of Truth 2.0 comes to us so bloody quick.
  16. MT @bequelin: I am increasingly getting the sense that the reassurances the US got from China over Chen's future were less than they say...
  17. @wentommy says: 2012, the whole world fails to save a blind person.
  18. 2012,全人类都救不出一个盲人。
  19. @cctvWeb says: Holding [an dissident's] wife and children as hostage is the party's tradition. It is so wrong to believe there is a little sig of mercy in this ruling party.
  20. 以妻儿相逼才是党的传统啊,真不能把党想得有丝丝仁慈。
  21. @dc_b says: Now, yes I mean right now, anyone in Beijing who sees this tweet, please go to Chaoyang hospital and stay with Chen. Close your computer and just go. There is no alternative choice. There is no time to loss. Nobody knows what happens next.
  22. 现在,就是现在,看到这条推的帝都推友,去朝阳医院陪伴陈光诚。关电脑,去吧,没有别的选择,只能陪伴这一会儿,没多少别的时间了。接下来,会怎么样,不知道。
  23. If Chinese officials threatened to beat Chen's innocent wife to DEATH...what is happening to @pearlher and Chen Kegui?
  24. This screenshot from U.S. Department of State shows US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's response to Chen's case.
