[–]_tabs 1 point 9 hours ago Crossposting the comment I made on your other thread: One of the main aspects of ACTA that seems troubling is that it encourages nations to make illegal the act of circumventing digital rights management software, which is used to prevent users from copying content. DRM may stop pirates, but it also encroaches on the ability of legal owners to resell or format-shift their media. If DRM is illegal to circumvent, it will hurt legal owners too. The clause in question, Section 5 Article 27.4.5, only applies to music but the clause still seems problematic. It states: Each Party shall provide adequate legal protection and effective legal remedies against the circumvention of effective technological measures that are used by authors, performers or producers of phonograms in connection with the exercise of their rights in, and that restrict acts in respect of, their works, performances, and phonograms, which are not authorized by the authors, the performers or the producers of phonograms concerned or permitted by law.
[–]chemiisan 1 point 9 hours ago Just a question; can you tell me if ACTA bans generic medicines? I've been hearing that, and that worries me. I stay away from companies that advertise for personal reasons, and I'm also afraid my medical bills will rise if generic drugs are illegalized. Any thoughts on how this might impact the insurance companies too?
It's great to see you guys covering this, but you're about a year too late to make a difference. The trade agreement has already been signed, and goes into effect shortly. The parties behind this have already moved onto the TPP, which will further export destructive IP policies onto developing nations.- What will be the impact of ACTA? What is at stake?
