Transgender Discussion on Superheroes and Comic Books
Plenty of superheroes, some superheroines, but very few transgendered do-gooders -- and the ones there are, aren't so good
- As I was conducting some research on superheroes in an altogether separate context, a question came to me. It was an offhand one, perfect for flinging out on Twitter and posing to Twitter-quaintance J.
- Though I only know J. virtually, I've enjoyed the tweets that J. has out out there, so I trusted my naïveté (read: ignorance) would be taken in good faith.
J. Skyler (jskylerinc) on TwitterThe latest from J. Skyler (@jskylerinc). author/public speaker/activist on LGBT history/culture/politics, feminism/gender equality & comi...- @adlewis I have a few listed here "Trans Identity in Fiction: Life Before Transition" bit.ly/ZvTKSb Sadly my knowledge is limited.
- Less limited than my own! J.'s article for @ComicBookBin proved informative and a great entry point for transgender perspectives on/in comics.
- Then J. enlisted the big guns:
- I didn't know Natalie yet -- but, wow, was I about to! (And very pleased for it.)
Natalie Reed (nataliereed84) on TwitterThe latest from Natalie Reed (@nataliereed84). Trans-feminist grrl blogger. Queer, recovering addict, [...]-survivor, etc. Sometimes thin...- @nataliereed84 @adlewis cool, I'd actually like a more extensive list too so I can do more trans commentary for my column at @comicosity.
- (I should note here that this Storify article in no way replaces that coming commentary; this impromptu dialogue touches upon but does not complete any sort of comprehensive commentary that J. or Natalie might provide elsewhere.)
- @jskylerinc @adlewis @comicosity Coagula in Doom Patrol, Wanda in Sandman, Shining Knight in Demon Knights (& to a lesser extent 7 Soldiers)
- @jskylerinc @adlewis @comicosity Masquerade in Blood Syndicate, Xavin in Runaways (allegorical), the transients in Transmetropolitan...
- @jskylerinc @adlewis @comicosity ...(again allegorical), Lord Fanny in The Invisibles, girl who gets killed off in Morrison's Doom Patrol...
- (Honestly, I'm not sure which Doom Patrol character Natalie meant, but we were on too much of a roll to derail it with my backfilling Grant Morrison gaps.)
