#YBI Chat #2

Our archive of a twitter chat with accomplished PSYBT entrepreneur Stuart Macdonald, who talked to us about his experience starting and growing a successful business.

  1. The aim of the chat is to give entrepreneurs from around the world the chance to connect and learn from each others experiences... #ybichat
  2. ...and to do a bit of networking. Afterwards we will collect up the tweets and post them on our blog for you to review! #ybichat
  3. So, lots of entrepreneurs were telling us they wanted the chance to speak to an accomplished business person, who had experience... #ybichat
  4. Ok taking a business from start up to established organisation. So this week we are pleased to be joined by @Stuart_seric... #ybichat
  5. Hi, @stuart_seric, tell us a bit about your business. And anyone taking part, please say hello... #ybichat
  6. Hi there - happy to join the chat session! I run an IT company based in Scotland serving the UK and now parts of Europe #ybichat
  7. I got started up through PSYBT - the Scottish arm of #ybi almost 15 years ago to run a private tuition business #ybichat
  8. not without its pitfalls and ups and downs of course... but there is no substitute for working for yourself #ybichat
  9. Coming to PSYBT and making the choice to set up your own business is a big decision, What was your biggest challenge? #ybichat
  10. On challenges: there are have been different challenges at each stage in development & we still have far to go but the biggies were #ybichat
  11. The first employee... the fist big cash flow problem... the first major problem with a job ... the first premises... #ybichat
  12. @stuart_seric I agree that there are risks involved in working for an organisation - depending on your role, where and when #ybichat
  13. @stuart_seric Trust is so important in business. Betraying trust for short-term gain will come back to bite you #ybichat
  14. @james4kelly couldn't agree more James - playing the long game and putting your customers first is the best answer in the long term #ybichat
  15. And anyone else in the chat, what challenges have you faced, and what advice would you value at this stage in your journey? #ybichat
  16. #ybichat biggest challenge was taking the risk to launch a biz. Have been running biz in spare time on top of job to mitigate risk for now
  17. Lots of the most important lessons that entrepreneurs look back on involve early failures! #ybichat
  18. @stuart_seric how do u make the transition frm self-employed to employer, + incentivise ppl to come on board in early, risky days? #ybichat
  19. @FightPoverty I think you have to find a like minded person who can share your vision ... attitude first and skills second! #ybichat
  20. the key element here is FIRST ... each time something you do something for the first time there is risk, challenge, & often reward #ybichat
  21. Sometime the only reward is learning to do it differently the next time! But it is all good learning and experience ;-) #ybichat
  22. @YouthBizInt #ybichat absolutely! That is the plan. But more responsibilities come with age. My advise: start young, fail fast, learn quick!
  23. @khbelizaire That is a big part of the problem, interesting to YBI is the different attitudes to business failure round the world #ybichat
  24. @khbelizaire scar tissue is stronger than regular skin!! start early & get those scars at $1 to avoid making them on the $1M deals #ybichat
