In honor of World Oceans Day (June 8th), I asked the online ocean science and conservation community to tweet some #OceanFacts.

  1. For world oceans day, share your favorite facts about the ocean! Use #OceanFacts , and I'll RT and Storify my favorites! Please RT and share
  2. Friendly warning.... there are going to be a metric crap-ton of #OceanFacts and #WorldOceansDay tweets and RTs from me today.
  3. Your #OceanFacts can be anything, but I request that they be, well, facts- not opinions, not links to other info, not things that are wrong.
  4. #OceanFacts about ocean habitats and the ocean itself
  5. #OceanFacts The ocean covers more than 70% of the earth's surface and have more than 95% of volume available for life
  6. Wetlands, estuaries & coral reefs are the start point of most oceanic food chains, & have a role of “nursery” for many species. #oceanfacts
  7. #OceanFacts About half the communications between nations are via underwater cables.
  8. The deepest part of the ocean can fit 20 Washington monuments stacked atop one another! ow.ly/bs0WM #OceanFacts
  9. Some parts of the ocean are transited by over 5000 ships per year #deepsn #oceanfacts bit.ly/HHXl2k
  10. This is scary- anthropogenic carbon dioxide doesn't just affect the atmosphere, it's also making the oceans more acidic #oceanfacts
  11. #OceanFacts Ocean acidification is a major threat to marine invertebrates as exoskeleton development is directly impacted by ocean pH
  12. Sound travels farther underwater than light. Many animals (shrimp, fish, whales) use it for communication. #OceanFacts
  13. There are 328,000,000 cubic miles of seawater on earth, covering approximately 71 percent of earth's surface. #oceanfacts #worldoceanday
  14. #WorldOceansDay The speed of sound in water is 1,435 m/sec. Nearly 5times faster than the speed of sound in air #OceanFacts @WhySharksMatter
  15. #oceanfacts the largest current is the Antarctic circumpolar current. It travels in a clockwise motion around Antarctica. #WORLDOCEANSDAY
  16. #OceanFacts The deep pelagic ocean is by far the largest, and the least explored, habitat on earth bit.ly/cMilWM
  17. The energy contained in the movement of the oceans can be turned into electricity -http://bit.ly/u0h2yQ #OceanFacts
  18. Two hundred million years of recorded geologic and biologic history of the Earth are found in the ocean's floor #oceanfacts #worldoceansday
  19. #OceanFacts - The longest #mountain range in the world is hidden under the #ocean - the MidOcean Ridge is ~50,000 miles long #WorldOceansDay
  20. #OceanFacts #worldoceansday “@OurOcean: Microbes make up 90% of the ocean's biomass. See amazing photos here: ocean.ly/JMSJZQ
