The Netherlands was looking to redeem themselves after losing to Spain in the finals of the 2010 World Cup.

The Dutch got their revenge with a 5-1 smacking of the Spanish at the Arena Forte Nova in Salvador, Brazil during the second day of the 2014 World Cup.

Holland didn't play dirty in this matchup like they did four years ago in South Africa.

Instead, they went out and played fantastic football (soccer) that shows why they should be considered one of the top contenders to win the tournament.

The Spanish side struck first in the 15th minute after Xabi Alonzo scored on a penalty kick for a 1-0 lead.

It seemed as if Spain was going to carry the momentum into halftime with the lead.

However, the Netherlands had other ideas.

In the 44th minute, Daley Blind delivered a cross into the box where Robin Van Persie buried it with a beautiful header to equalize the game at 1.

  4. That gave the Netherlands more confidence as they increased their attack in the second half and put more pressure to try and break the Spanish defense.

The Dutch were able to breakthrough in the 53rd minute when Arjen Robben  scored the go-ahead goal for a 2-1 lead.

After that, all hell broke loose as Stefan de Vrij scored in the 64th minute to increase the lead to 3-1.

Then, Van Persie scored again in the 72nd minute to make it 4-1.

Afterward, Robben added his second goal of the game in the 80th minute to make it 5-1 and finish off the massacre of the Spanish.

Spain will look to recover from their worst loss in their history in their next match against Chile next Wednesday at 3 p.m. eastern, 2 p.m. central.

If the Spanish play like they did again, then the defending champs will be heading home very early.
